[02] Heated parliamentary debate on economy

During an off the agenda parliamentary debate on the economy yesterday, Prime Minister Costas Simitis attacked the New Democracy party verbally, accusing it of identifying itself with interests of the private sector. He specifically said that the main opposition party was supporting the shipowners' positions for one-bottomed vessels.

He also stressed that the government's priority up to 2006 is the decrease of unemployment to 7.5 per cent and of the public debt to 90 per cent of the GDP.

From his side, New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis stated that corruption flourished during Mr Simitis' term of office, adding that the economy is basically a political issue and should be based on competition, development and social cohesion.

Regarding one-bottomed ships, he said that his party did not disagree with their replacement, but just asked for a slower pace of replacement to be implemented because of high cost.

Finally, the Secretary General of the Communist party of Greece Aleka Papariga accused both the New Democracy and PASOK parties of having a burdened past with shady dealings with economic interests.

From his side, Synaspismos party leader Nikos Constantopoulos referred to financial interests and to the damage they are causing to public life.

[03] The EU approves the withdrawal of one-bottomed tankers

The Euro Parliament voted in favour of the withdrawal of one-bottomed tankers by September 1, 2003, with 501 votes in favour and 5 against. Out of the 14 Euro Deputies that abstained, 9 belonged to the New Democracy party and two to the DIKKI party.

The New Democracy Euro Deputies attributed their stance to the strict timetable for the withdrawal of one-bottomed tankers, accusing the government of having given in to French and Spanish pressure for a decision that would affect negatively the Greece Marine and Marine Industry.

    [04] W.E.D. dedicated to water

The World Environment Day is dedicated today to water and problems caused by its pollution and its lack.

Using as a motto 'Water: Two billion people are dying for it', the United Nations is warning that pollution and the excessive pumping of water out of earth are threatening the world health and development. It should be noted that the United Nations believes that 80% of all deaths caused by various deceases in the developing world are also attributed to the civilians' inability to have access to clean water.

From her side, Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works Minister Vaso Papandreou stated that today should serve as a reason for a more effective effort towards the protection and improvement of the environment, adding that the maintenance of the environment should be pursued in all sectors of our social and personal life.
