    A mainly fine day is forecast with some cloudy patches developing later in the day and possibility of local storms on high ground in Epirus and Macedonia. Winds notherly strong in the Aegean. Temperatures in Athens will range between 21 C to 33 C and in Thessaloniki between 19 C to 32 C.

    [02] Interest rates down

    Commercial banks are likely to proceed to reductions in interest rates today following last week s decision of the European Central Bank to lower the basic interbank interest rate by 0,5%. However, only slight reductions on mortgage loans are expected as Greece is among the countries with the lowest interest rates.

    [03] Economy- incentives

    Development Minister, Akis Tsohatzopoulos expressed conviction that a solution would be found within this week for the continuation of operation of the TVX Hellas gold mine. However, 120 miners remain underground for the 8th consecutive day claiming their right for work.

    A meeting is being held today to discuss an early pension scheme &#8211; approved by the Finance Ministry-for 435 laid off workers of the Softex paper company in Drama.

    In the meantime, Finance Minister, Nikos Hristodoulakis has announced tax breaks for small and medium sized companies, pointing out that they are the backbone of the Greek economy. He also said that a new development law will offer more attractive incentives for investments

    [04] Opinion polls

    The government and the main opposition ND party continue crossing swords over the latest opinion polls which indicate that the ND has surged ahead of the government in voters preference. According to a survey conducted by Kappa research and published in the Sunday newspaper To Vima tis Kyriakis, ND is 7,8% ahead of the ruling Pasok party. Another opinion poll carried out by the Alco company, on behalf of the Alfa television sets the difference between the parties at 8,4%.

    In response to the question who is the most appropriate for the post of Prime-minister, the Kappa research survey brings Kostas Simitis ahead while according to Alco Kostas Karamanlis is slightly ahead .

    Speaking to state radio, Press undersecretary, Tilemahos Hitiris stressed that the people s daily problems were basically of an economic nature and the government planned to focus its efforts on these difficulties in order to find viable solutions.

    [05] Demonstrations against the creation of waste processing sites

    Residents of northeast Attica yesterday continued their demonstrations in protest against the government s decision to create waste management and processing sites in their area. On Wednesday, when the relative bill will be voted on in parliament a protest rally has been organised outside the Parliament House in Athens.
