    A fine day is forecast with local showers and storms in the central and northern parts of the country and in the northern Aegean. Winds northerly light to moderate turning strong locally in the Aegean. Temperatures in Athens will range between 25 C to 34 C and in Thessaloniki between 22 C to 31 C.

    [02] Massive security measures for E.U summit in Thessaloniki

    Prime-minister, and current holder of the EU rotating Presidency, Kostas Simitis will today meet with his Italian counterpart in Rome, the last leg of his European tour .

    On Thursday ,the Greek Prime-minister will recieve the EU leaders for the EU summit meeting to be held on Friday and Saturday at Porto Carras, Halkidiki.

    The new European constitution will dominate the agenda, as well as the drafting of a common policy on illegal immigration and Euro- Atlantic relations in view of an upcoming visit by Prime-minister Simitis to Washington within the framework of the EU-US summit meeting on June 25.

    Massive security measures are being taken for the EU summit meeting in Thessaloniki as about 100.000 demonstrators &#8211; members of movements protesting against globalisation are expected to arrive in Thessaloniki in the enxt few days. Their representtaives have declared themselves determined to safeguard the area of activities and the political character of their protests.

    The Union of Civil servants is staging a 24 hour Panhellenic strike on Friday to facilitate those wanting to participate in the demonstartions.

    In the meantime the American State Department has issued an advisory calling American citizens visiting Thessaloniki and the broader area of Halkidiki to be careful till June 23.

    During the EU Genera Affairs Council in Louxembourg, EU chief for security and defence, Xavie Solana and EU foreign affairs Commissioner, Chris Paten described Greece s EU Presidency as rich and constructive.

    Meanwhile, a summit meeting of the European Popular party will be held on Thursday, to be attended by 10 Prime-ministers and leaders of 60 parties. The meeting will be preceded by a conference of party leaders of the European Democratic Union, under the chairmanship of ND leader, Kostas Karamanlis.

    [03] Part-time jobs in the public sector

    The minister for the Interior, Kostas Skandalidis and Finance, Nikos Christodoulakis, will make public today the contents of a draft bill on part-time work. The bill sets out the legal framework for the hiring of over 40.000 people in the public sector , for jobs involving up to 4 hours work per day and less than 20 hours a week.
