    [03] EPP summit meeting concludes

The contribution to regional stability and the European good neighbourly relations is a basic precondition for each acceding country, according to the resolution for the European prospect of western Balkans issued after the completion of the enlarged European Popular Party Summit meeting presided by New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis in Chalkidiki, northern Greece.

Mr Karamanlis made it clear that he would ask from the European Popular Party Prime Ministers to support the Greek EU Presidency, leading thus to the successful conclusion of the Summit Meeting, since the positive outcome of the presidency is a national issue for the New Democracy party.

The New Democracy party leader described the work of the Constituent Assembly good, pointing out that the presentation of the Constitution plan constitutes an important development, underlining at the same time that most of the European Popular Party proposals had been included in the text submitted by the Assembly. However, he maintained that the European Commission and the European Parliament would have to be boosted and that each member state should be able to propose its own commissioner.

He rejected the abolition of rotating presidency and the institutionalisation of a President's position at the European Council and insisted for a boosted cooperation in defence policy, stressing that any member states wished to join in the future should be allowed to do so.

According to valid information in Strasburg, the permanent Turkish representative in the European Council stated that the European Court of Human Rights has decided that Ankara unconditionally compensate Titina Loizidou by October.

Commenting on the decision for Mrs Titina Loizidou's compensation, the Cypriot government spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides told NET station that he considered it very important because the property right is not affected by the Turkish occupation.
