  • [01] Weather forecast

    A fine and hot day is forecast with local showers and storms in the northern and central parts of the country in the afternoon. Winds variable, light. Temperatures in Athens will range between 24 C to 37 C and in Thessaloniki between 19 C to 33 C.

    The National Meteorological Service has forecast rise in temperatures for the next few days reaching 42 C on Wednesday in some parts of the country. The heat wave is expected to last 5 days. The Health Ministry has called on state hospitals, health centers and first-aid services to be on the alert to deal with any problems which may arise from the heat-wave. People particularly the elderly and young people have been advised to stay out of the sun, avoid heavy outdoor work and drink plenty of liquids.

    [02] N.D party calls for early elections

    The President of the main opposition N.D party , Kostas Karamanlis called for early elections yesterday accusing the government of inefficiency. Speaking to his party s parliamentary team he said that the country could not cope with an extended pre-election period while Greeks demanded a new government.

    In response, government spokesman , Hristos Protopappas accused Karamanlis of

    Resorting to pre-election fireworks to impress and reiterated once again that national elections will be held at the end of the government s 4 year term, in spring 2004.

    Commenting on Karamanlis speech, the Greek Communist party described it as boundless demagogy, adding that N.D was the party of the wealthy while the President of the Coalition of the Left and Progress party, Nikos Konstantopoulos stressed that early election scenario were not of any value for the daily life of workers.

    [03] Deadline for the issue of residence permits expires on Monday

    The prefectures of Athens and Pireus will remain open at the week-end to facilitate immigrants as the deadline for the submission of documents for the issue of residence permits expires on Monday.

    [04] Panhellenic Exams results.

    The announcement of results of the panhellenic exams for admission to tertiary education which began on Friday is expected to be completed on Monday while the list with the names and schools candidates will have been admitted to is to be announced at the end of August.

    [05] Israel and Palestinians reached a disengagement deal

    Hamas decided to suspend attacks on Israelis yesterday, on the eve of U.S national adviser, Condoleeza Rice visit to the region while Israel and the Palestinians reached a disengagement deal in the Gaza Strip and Bethleem.

    The Israeli government viewed with scepticism Hamas decision for truce insisting on the dismantling of extreme Palestinian organisations while the White House described it as a first step towards the right direction. The U.N General Secretary welcomed the agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority

    In the meantime, the E.U gave a negative response to American President George Bush request to include Hamas political wing in the list of terrorist organisations.
