    A partly cloudy day is forecast with local rain and storms mainly in Macedonia and Thrace. Winds northerly, light to moderate. In Athens temperatures will range between 22C to 34C and in Thessaloniki between 19C to 31 C.

    [02] Government focus on combating soaring prices

    The government s activities this week will center on issues concerning the daily life of citizens and changes in the electoral law.

    Interior Minister, Kostas Scandalidis today is expected to make announcements related to the newly created institution ' Citizens Service Centers while tomorrow s scheduled meeting of Prime-minister, Kostas Simitis and the new General Secretary of the ruling Pasok party, Mihalis Hrisohoidis with competent ministers will focus on combating soaring prices.

    In a bid to ensure the consensus of all political parties , the government is beginning a dialogue on the electoral law. The inner cabinet meets on Thursday to submit its proposals for changes in the electoral system to come into effect in 2008. However, the main opposition N.D and the Greek Communist parties have stated they would not take part in the dialogue while the Coalition of the Left and Progress said it would take part despite its serious reservations.

    [03] Dektash proposal aimed to disorient public opinion

    The Cyprus National Council meets today to examine a proposal by Turkish-Cypriot leader, Raulf Dektash concerning his offer to allow inhabitants of Varosi to return to their homes in exchange for the re-operation of the Nicosia international airport.

    In preliminary statements yesterday, Cyprus President, Tasos Papadopoulos , who recently returned from a visit to the U.S, where he met with the American special envoy on Cyprus, Tomas Weston said that foreign mediators considered Dektash proposal as an attempt to disorient public opinion from the substance of the Cyprus issue with the aim to maintain the occupation status quo of the northern sector of the island.

    [04] Submission of applications for tertiary education July 14-25.

    Submission of application forms for admission to tertiary education begins today and expires on July 25. Candidates must be careful in filling their applications as a wrong listing of schools of preference will exclude them from the schools even if they have gathered the required mark.

    [05] Indonesia-bomb exploded in parliament complex

    A bomb exploded in the basement of Indonesia s parliament early this morning. An official from the parliament who saw the explosion said nobody was injured in the blast and it caused little damage.

    Bomb incidents have occurred sporadically in Indonesia since it started its transition to democracy in 1998. Motives have varied from gangland rivalry and sectarian feuds to political violence and reaction to international issues

    [06] New group for Al Qaeda behind attacks on U.S forces

    A group- whose name has not been heard before- calling itself the Armed Islamic Movement for Al Qaeda, the Falluja Branch said in a tape broadcast by Dubai based Al Arabiya television that its members and not Saddam Housein loyalists were behind attacks on U.S forces in Iraq and warned of more bloodshed in the coming days but it did not say where it would be in Iraq or elsewhere.

    In the meantime, a U.S soldier was badly wounded today when his military vehicle was hit by a rocket propeled grenade while yesterday a bomb blast near a police station in a suburb of Bagdad killed one person and wounded another.

    Meanwhile, in the U.S and Britain questions persisted about the credibility of evidence justifying the U.S led military operation on Iraq threatening to further erode public support for American President George Bush and U.S ally British Prime-minister, Tony Blair. However, British Foreign Minister, Jack Straw insists that Saddam Housein sough to buy uranium from Africa for Iraq s nuclear program.

    Israeli security forces have arrested a suspected Irish bomb-maker in the West Bank He is being interrogated about the reasons for his visit to Palestinian territories.
