    A fine and hot day is forecast for most of the country, with some cloudy patches in the north and the possibility of occasional storms.

    Temperatures in Athens will range from 24 to 36 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 21 to 35 degrees.

    [02] Government aims to promote 25% of EU funds

    The ambitious aim of promoting 25% of total funds from the 3rd European Union Support Framework by the end of the year was raised during successive meetings that Prime Minister Costas Simitis had today with the National Economy, Environment, Development, Transport, Culture and Health ministers.

    [03] Labour minister says unemployment will drop

    Following a meeting with the Prime Minister today, Labour minister Dimitris Reppas gave assurances that the country's unemployment rate would continue its downward trend. He also noted that compared to the corresponding period in 2000, unemployment has dropped by 2.5%.

    [04] Greece and Turkey agree on military cooperation

    Greece and Turkey agreed today to step up military cooperation, in a move diplomats said indicated goodwill, despite recent tensions over airspace and territorial rights in the Aegean Sea. Part of a series of confidence-building measures brokered by NATO, the accords follow an agreement by both sides last year to halt military exercises on Cyprus.

    [05] Forest fires blaze on the island of Crete

    The island of Crete is engulfed by forest fires, due to galeforce winds blowing in the region. A massive blaze is burning on two fronts in Rethymno, in the areas of Melambes and Aghia Galini, as well as a fire in the region of Prines in the Chania prefecture. A strong firefighting force is doing its best to extinguish the flames, but its work has been made extremely difficult by the unfavourable weather conditions.

    [06] Greek travellers ignore health precautions abroad

    According to a survey conducted at six European airports, Greeks travellers visit countries plagued by infectious diseases, without taking the necessary precautions. Approximately 50% are not informed about public health problems in developing countries, while the percentage of Greek travellers who receive innoculations and arm themselves with the appropriate medicines is even smaller.

    [07] US claims that Saddam Husseins two sons are dead

    The US commander in Iraq said today that medical and dental records, as well as Saddam Hussein's former aides, have confirmed that his sons, Uday and Qusay were killed in a gunbattle with American troops. US president George W. Bush said the deaths of the brothers would reassure Iraqis that Saddam's rule was over for good.

    [08] Fighting rages in Monrovia

    Heavy fighting continued to rage in Liberia's capital, Monrovia, today, as rebels made another major push to skirt around the back of the city and cut off supply routes. Mortars also slammed into the suburb of Gardnersville, on the route of any rebel advance, and thousands of people fled in fear.

    Hong Kong raised its typhoon alert to the third highest level, as Typhoon Imbudo ' the most powerful to hit the region in years ' swirled closer to one of the world's top financial centres.
