A crucial meeting is presently underway at the Ministry of Development with the participation of all related bodies in order to seek a solution to the dead-end.The strike has already caused many refueling problems for the merchant marine industry and at many gas stations throughout the country. The problem is greater in Thessaloniki and on the island of Crete. In the meantime, the lack of fuel resulted in a four-hour delay in departure this morning at the port of Thessaloniki for the Aiolos Kenteris ferry-boat which was destined for the islands of Limnos-Mytilini and Chios. (30/7/2003 8:24:00 μμ) [03] Karamanlis lashes out in ParliamentTemperatures flared in Parliament today during a discussion on the draft plan submitted by the New Democracy Party concerning the institution of mandatory investigations into the stock market transactions of MP's and high government officials.The leader of the New Democracy party, Kostas Karamanlis sharply underlined that investigations should not only be limited to parliament members and all those who handle public funds who are protected by asylum. In equally sharp undertones, the Minister of the Interior, Costas Scandalidis characterized ND's proposals as temporary generalizations. (30/7/2003 8:26:00 μμ) [04] Mayors and prefects meet with PM SimitisA two-hour meeting held this morning at Maximos Mansion, between Prime Minister Costas Simitis and members of the board of the Central Association of Municipalities and Communities of Greece (KEDKE) resulted in an additional 750 million euro for the country's prefectures and municipalities.Also attending the meeting were the Minister of the Interior Costas Scandalidis, deputy Minister of the Interior Labros Papadimas, and the director of the Prime Minister's legal office, Professor Giorgos Papadimitriou. Prime Minister Simitis also committed to creating new citizens service centers, Municipal Police and home care assistance programs.
