    Hot, sunny weather is forecast all parts of the country, although there may be some isolated storms in Epirus, Macedonia and the western mainland from early evening. Winds northerly, light to strong, turning gale force in parts of the Aegean. Temperatures in Athens will range from 25C and 33C; and in Thessaloniki from 23C to 33C.

    [02] Bottled water profirs at 350%

    The Committee for Competition will examine all water bottling companies on an order of the Deputy Minister of Development, Kimon Koulouris as the ministry has found exorbitant prices being charged for bottled water following strict market checks. Combined profits for bottled water have been determined to be over 350%. In addition, the district attorney's office will also question the operators of 15 ship cafeterias.

    [03] Greek Communist Party in favor of simple proportionate vote

    The Greek Communist Party is charging that the government's proposal for changes in the electoral law will result in an 'adulterated ballot box'. In an announcement, the Communist Party underlines the need to institute the simple proportional vote as a fixed electoral system and calls on the country's political and social powers to in favor of the simple proportional vote to join forces for action.

    [04] Fire in Athens center

    A fire broke out in the center of Athens at noontime at the intersection of Ermou and Athinas streets. The fire was contained an hour later while the cause of the blaze is estimated to have resulted from an overheated printing machine.

    In the meantime, the Civil Protection authority is warning that there is an extreme danger of fires breaking out today in various parts of the country. State authorities are in heightened alert in order to immediately confront any such instances.

    [05] Vasilis Xeros objection overruled

    The court trying the November17th case overruled the objection raised by Vassilis Xeros, who asked that his preliminary statements not be taken into account, since, as he claimed, was the product of threats and psychological force. Today's proceedings concluded with a reading of V. Xeros' confession, while he exited the court early as a sign of protest. Dionysis Georgiadis is expected to testify tomorrow.

    [06] Rowing events in Schinias cancelled today due to winds

    Today's events in the in the World Junior Rowing Championship in Schinias were cancelled, following a decision by the Organizing Committee and the International Rowing Federation, due to the strong winds of 6-7 Beaufort in the area, appreciating that there is a serious risk of the vessels sinking.

    [09] today, killing at least nine people and wounding dozens. The motive for the attack was not immediately clear and no group claimed responsibility. The blast however occurred one week after Jordan gave asylum to two daughters of Saddam Hussein. Dozens were wounded, including seven from inside the embassy who were rushed to nearby hospitals

    [10] 12 klilled in Taliban attacks

    Six Afghan soldiers and a driver for a U.S. aid agency were killed today in a raid by suspected Taliban guerrillas. The fundamentalist group said it had also killed five government soldiers in a separate attack. The death toll would be the biggest for a single day attributed to a resurgent Taliban guerrilla movement in many months, although local government officials denied the latter incident had been an attack and gave no casualty figure for it.

    Meanwhile, in Kabul, state television said police had discovered five Soviet-designed rockets primed to fire in a district just south of the capital that was once a base of a warlord who used to bombard the city with rockets.

    [11] Peacekeepers arrive in Liberian capital

    Hundreds of thousands of Liberians cheered West African peacekeepers as they rumbled through the pockmarked capital today, in an outburst of joy on streets that just last week formed a deadly frontline.

    As war-weary people celebrated the arrivals, President Charles Taylor prepared to leave, saying he would hand over power to his vice president, Moses Blah, next Monday. He is then supposed to leave Liberia and go into exile, although he has set no date yet.

    Peacekeepers flew to Monrovia after three rebel attacks on Monrovia left at least 2,000 people dead and turned the city into a giant refugee camp with little food and water. The foreign troops have brought new hope to a land broken by 14 years of conflict that have destabilised the region and created a generation of brutal young fighters.
