    A cloudy day is forecast, with occasional rain and storms on the mainland.

    Temperatures in Athens will range from 25 to 33 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 23 to 31 degrees.

    [02] Greek coastguard rescues Turkish crew after ship sinks

    Greek coastguards said today they have rescued all 17 Turkish crew members of a Malta-flagged freighter from a life raft, after their ship sank, following a fire off the Greek coast. The ship, called "Organ," was sailing from Ukraine to Tunisia, with a cargo of steel. Nearby ships, together with two coastguard boats and a helicopter rushed to the scene, after an SOS was received from the vessel.

    [03] Galeforce winds disrupt coastal shipping

    Galeforce winds in the Aegean are wreaking havoc with coastal shipping, preventing a number of vessels from leaving Piraeus and Rafina ports for the islands. The Aeolos Express will not depart for Chios, due to a local ban on sailing, while problems have been reported with the schedules of high-speed boats from Rafina, particularly those bound for the Cyclades

    [04] Strong winds pose fire threat

    The strong winds are posing a serious threat of fires in Attica, Evia, Ikaria and Samos, according to the General Secretariat for Civil Protection. The public is requested to take special care to avoid starting fires and to immediately notify the fire brigade if a fire is spotted. The strong northerly winds are expected to abate slightly tomorrow.

    [05] German rowing team suffers gastro-enteritis

    Cases of gastro-enteritis, suffered by members of the German rowing team ' in Athens for the Junior World Rowing Championships ' has been traced to a salmonella germ. A meeting, chaired by Health Minister Costas Stefanis, was held today to discuss the matter and it was clarified that the incident was an isolated one. However, intensive health and sanitation checks will be carried out, on the request of Prime Minister Costas Simitis, to prevent any similar cases.

    [06] Arafat condemns Israeli raid inNablus

    Palestinian President Yasser Arafat accused Israel today of threatening peace, by carrying out a raid against militants, as the Islamic group Hamas vowed to avenge the deaths of two comrades. Two top Hamas militants and an Israeli soldier were killed in a firefight between the militants and an elite army unit, during a raid in a refugee camp in the West Bank city of Nablus.

    [07] Bush announces "long-term undertaking" in Iraq

    American President George W. Bush today vowed a "long-term undertaking" to bring democracy and economic prosperity to Iraq and across the Middle East. In his weekly radio address ' broadcast amid renewed violence in Iraq ' Bush offered an upbeat assessment of the current situation in that country.

    [08] Kosovo shooting leaves one dead

    One person was killed and two injured in a shootout among ethnic Albanians, in a village near Pec in southwestern Kosovo today, said United Nations police. The shooting was the latest in a series of violent incidents across the province over the past few weeks, including last Sunday's killing of a UN officer.
