    Temperatures in Athens will range from 16 to 28 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 15 to 27 degrees.

    [02] FM Papandreou meets with US Secretary of State Powell

    The Cyprus issue and the situation in the Middle East were the focus of talks Foreign Minister George Papandreou had today in Washington with US Secretary of State Colin Powell. Late last night, Papandreou met with National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice, with whom he also discussed the Cyprus dispute, as well as the situation in Iraq, the Middle East crisis and the fragile stability in the Balkans.

    [03] Greece and Turkey agree on new flight paths in the Aegean

    Greece and Turkey have agreed to open new flight paths over the Aegean Sea ' a move that Athens says will result in economic and military benefits. The initiative ' set for implementation from December 25 ' is expected to help relieve air traffic congestion during the 2004 Olympic Games in the Greek capital.

    [04] Tough new bill curtails stock transactions for MPs and others

    A tough new bill, tabled in parliament today by the Interior Ministry, virtually puts an end to stock market transactions for parliamentary deputies, local government officials and those handling public monies. A total of 21 categories of professions will be required to submit meticulously detailed statements, declaring their sources of income and assets, backed by bank, bourse and tax records.

    [05] Industrialists clash with Development Ministry over prices

    The Greek Industrialists Association has clashed with the Development Ministry over attempts by the government to curb soaring prices and profiteering through stricter market regulations and agreements with business people to freeze prices. Development Undersecretary Kimon Koulouris called on them to declare openly whether they were in favour, or against, rising prices.

    [06] PM urges more rapid absorption of EU funds

    Prime Minister Costas Simitis, chairing a meeting attended by the ministers of Finance, Public Works, Development, Interior, Labour and Health, today urged more rapid absorption of funds from the 3rd EU Support Framework Package. National Economy Minister Nikos Christodoulakis noted that Greece was not at risk of losing funds, but could not afford to rest on its laurels.

    [07] Teachers striking over pay

    University and technical college professors appear to be heading towards a continuation of their current 5-day strike, following a fruitless meeting today with Education Minister Petros Efthymiou and Finance Undersecretary Nikos Farmakis, to decide on salary increases. Meanwhile, elementary and high school teachers have announced industrial action next month, in support of their demands for higher pay.

    [08] Purported Saddam tape demands US forces quit Iraq

    Arabic television channel Al Arabiya aired an audio tape today, purportedly from ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, in which he demanded that the United States unconditionally withdraw its forces from Iraq.

    [09] Arafat dismisses US veto of UN demand to Israel

    Palestinian President Yasser Arafat today shrugged off an American veto of a United Nations resolution demanding that Israel not harm or expel him. But other Palestinian officials feared that Israel could regard the US move as a licence to kill Arafat
