    A cloudy and cool day is forecast, with showers and local storms.

    Temperatures in Athens will range from 10 to 18 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 6 to 13 degrees.

    [02] Finance ministry disagrees with European Commission report

    Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis said today the government did not agree with a European Commission report, which forecasts a public deficit for Greece well above estimations by the ministry, as well as a slowdown in the growth rate after next year's Olympic Games. Christodoulakis said the forecasts were unrealistic and noted there was a risk of a slump in the growth rate only if economic policies changed after 2004.

    [03] Package of tourism measures decided

    A package of measures to boost tourist development in Greece was decided on today by a bi-ministerial committee, chaired by Prime Minister Costas Simitis. As part of the initiative, restrictions will be lifted on the construction of hotels throughout the country, incentives will be offered to change the use of old hotels that cannot be renovated, and the National Tourism Organisation will be converted into a company responsible for tourism marketing and promotion.

    [04] Greece satisfied with US State Dept assurances on Games

    Government spokesman Christos Protopappas today expressed satisfaction about satements made by the US State Department spokesman, Richard Boucher, saying that Greece had the will and capability to organise safe and successful Olympic Games. He made the remarks when called on to comment on a report suggesting that the Olympics could be open to attacks by terrorists, using weapons of mass destruction.

    [05] US civil aviation officials check Greek air safety systems

    Officials from the US civil aviation service are currently in Greece to check safety procedures and systems in the country's airspace. In 2000, a total of 37 irregularities had been found and Greece had been demoted to the second class category, from its former top rating.

    [06] Greeks say US should pay for Iraq reconstruction - survey

    A Europe-wide survey, released earlier this week, indicates that most Greeks believe the United Nations should be responsible for the reconstruction of Iraq and that the United States ' which invaded the country ' should foot most of the bill. An overwhelming majority of 96 percent of Greeks said there was not excuse for the attacks, compared to an average of 68 percent among other Europeans.

    [07] US post-war death toll in Iraq higher than during invasion

    The US postwar combat death toll in Iraq climbed past the number of soldiers killed during the invasion, when the American military said today it had lost two more dead in a roadside bomb north of Baghdad. Their deaths brought to 116 the number of US troops killed in hostilities since the war was declared over in May.

    [08] 11 trapped miners in Russia rescued

    Eleven Russian miners, of the 13 trapped underground for nearly a week, have been found alive and brought to the surface. A twelfth miner was dead and another was still missing in the coal mine.

    [09] Israeli troops kill Palestinian on Gaza border

    Israeli soldiers shot dead a Palestinian and wounded another on Israel's boundary with the Gaza Strip today, and found an explosive device apparently left by the pair, said military sources.
