    All parts of the country will be cloudy, with light rain in the northwest and scattered storms in the northern Ionian and Epirus overnight. Winds southeasterly, moderate to gale force. Temperatures in Athens will range between 17-28 C; and in Thessaloniki from 12C to 24C.

    [02] Govt's social measures to be implemented by year's end

    During a lengthy meeting yesterday, Prime Minister Costas Simitis urged ministers to speed up implementation of the welfare measures package by years end. Mr. Simitis underlined that beaurocratic procedures should also be eliminated and pointed out the need for citizens to be fully informed about the available social measures

    [03] 25 thousand part time employees in public sector

    25,000 thousand part-time employees will be hired prior to the Christmas holidays in the public sector. In an interview to net radio, the Deputy Minister of Labor, Lefteris Tziolas clarified that 65% of those hired will be females who will be placed in the social services sector.

    [04] ND leader criticizes gov't-calls for early elections

    During a party gathering in Peristeri today, the leader of the ND party Konstantinos Karamanlis openly criticised the government calling it a government of a corruption and lawlessness. In addition, the ND leader once again called for early elections.

    [05] Universities to open Monday

    Universities will open on Monday after professors decided to postpone their mobilizations until December 5th when a government bill on the assessment of academic standards in universities is due to be tabled in Parliament. With respect to the examination period, each school will separately decide whether to carry out double examinations in January or whether to conduct examinations during November. According to estimations by the dean of the University of Piraeus, Vasilis Benos, the university year will not have to be extended.

    Meanwhile, grade school and high school teachers have announced a 48-hour strike on Monday.

    [06] Ferry strike continues at Rio-Antirrio

    Workers striking for better pension rights halted ferry service linking the western port of Patras at the Rio-Antirrio crossing to the Greek mainland for a second day today. The protest - due to end early Monday - disrupted traffic from Italy as truck drivers and other motorists were forced to make the crossing at Aegio, a port nearly 40 kilometers east of Patras. Strikers defied Friday's court ruling that declared their action illegal.

    [07] Traffic changes in view of Athens Marathon

    Traffic will be disrupted in Athens and along the marathon race route (from Marathon village to Athens) tomorrow from 6.30 a.m. until 2.30 p.m. as the annual Athens Marathon, this year also an Olympic test event, gets under way. Roads to be affected include Marathonos, Mesogeion, Vas. Sofias and Vas. Constantinou Avenues, Archimidous Street, Vas. Olgas Avenue and Ardittou. Parking will be forbidden along the entire marathon route (in both lanes) from midnight on Saturday until the end of the race.

    [08] Iraq bomb kills 2 US soldiers-more attacks feared

    Guerrillas killed two U.S. soldiers today in a bomb blast in Mosul, northern Iraq, and warnings of further bloodshed prompted fearful Iraqis to stay off the streets and keep their children out of school. Iraq's U.S. governor, Paul Bremer, warned that attackers would probably strike again before occupation forces or Iraqi police could track them down.

    [09] Afghan clashes kill at least 10-Turk kidnapped

    At least 10 people were killed in clashes in the last two days and a Turkish engineer kidnapped ahead of a high-level U.N. visit to Afghanistan to consider how NATO can bring security to unruly provinces. Factional rivals in the north of the country engaged in what one commander called "fierce fighting" from Friday, killing at least five soldiers.
