    A cloudy and rainy day is forecast, with local storms in the southern parts of the country.

    Temperatures in Athens will range from 15 to 20 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 12 to 16 degrees.

    [02] UN approves Olympic Truce with absolute majority

    For the first time in the history of the United Nations, the organization today approved with an absolute majority the resolution submitted by Greece for a worldwide cessation of all hostilities during the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The resolution calls on all the UN's member states to observe the Olympic Truce for the 2-week duration of the Games, in a revival of the ancient Olympic idea of a ceasefire.

    [03] Greek bishop'smeeting to decide relations with Patriarchate

    A crucial meeting of Greek Orthodox Church's metropolitan bishops is current in session, the outcome of which will decide the future of their relations with the Constantinople-based Ecumenical Patriarchate, following a recent dispute about jurisdiction over northern Greek dioceses. In his opening speech, Archbishop Christodoulos clarified that the Greek Church was not asking for any changes in the current status quo, which, he said, has been force for the past 74 years.

    [04] Bill on civil servants' salaries tabled in parliament

    New salary rates for civil servants, tabled in parliament today, provides for increases of 6.4% from January 1, 2004, and incorporation of basic allowances into wages. The draft bill also sets the monthly salary for newly appointed civil servants ' who have a high school diploma ' at 590 euros.

    [05] Strikes continue in the public sector

    According to the Civil Servants Union, participation in today's 24-hour strike was satisfactory. Also striking today are state hospital doctors, IKA doctors and ambulance personnel, while kindergartens, elementary schools and high schools were closed for the second day today, due to a 48-hour strike by teachers. In other industrial unrest, dock workers at the Rio-Antirrio ferry crossing are continuing their ongoing walkout, and Civil Aviation staff were also striking today, causing serious problems with flights.

    [06] Europeans say Iraq war unjustified

    A recent survey by Eurobarometer indicates that 68% of Europeans consider the war on Iraq unjustified, with the number rising as high as 96% in Greece ' followed by Austria, France and Spain. Only the Danish said they believed the war was justified.

    [07] Rain causes problems in Athens

    Today's heavy downfall of rain caused serious traffic congestion in downtown Athens and particularly in the southern suburbs. The Fire Brigade received hundreds of calls reporting flooded basements, homes and shops in Voula, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, Piraeus and Kesariani, while small rivers formed in Vouliagmeni Avenue and coastal streets.

    [08] 4 wounded in Baghdad blasts on US HQ

    Insurgents fired several mortars or rockets at the US-led administration headquarters in the Iraqi capital Baghdad today, wounding four people in the second brazen attack on the compound in as many nights.

    [09] Arafat-Qurie row delays new Palestinian cabinet

    A power struggle between Yasser Arafat and his prime minister, Ahmed Qurie, blocked plans to form a new Palestinian government today and threatened to delay renewed peace moves between Israel and the Palestinians.
