    In a written statement, the US State Department expressed the certainty that Greeks have the will and the resources to organize secure and successful Olympic Games.

    [03] FBI's Mueller gives awards to officials for Nov. 17th org breakup

    FBI Director Robert Mueller met with Olympic security chiefs today within the framework of his brief visit to Greece. Sources briefed on the meetings, said Mueller reinforced U.S. calls to broaden the scope of counter-terrorism planning and also urged for more intelligence sharing. Mueller's contacts included talks with Public Order Minister Giorgos Floridis, the chief of the Greek police and the head of the Greek intelligence agency. The two men discussed issues of mutual concern and, especially, collaboration for the 2004 Olympics. Mueller honored Greek law enforcement officials, including the chief of the Greek police, Fotis Nasiakos and prosecutor Ioannis Diotis for their role last year in the breakup of the November 17 terror organization.

    [04] Papandreou-Peres meeting

    The latest developments in the Middle East were examined today in Athens during a meeting between Foreign Minister, Giorgos Papandreou and former Israeli Foreign Minister and Israeli opposition leader Shimon Peres. The two men also underlined the need for Israelis and Palestinians to resume a dialogue. With respect to the Cyprus issue, Mr. Peres stated he was optimistic about Cyprus' future.

    [05] Government supports Bulgaria's EU accession-Papandreou

    Foreign Minister, Giorgos Papandreou expressed the Greek government's support for Bulgaria's EU accession immediately following his meeting today with Bulgarian president, Georgi Parvanov. The Bulgarian president completed his three-day visit to Greece this afternoon.

    [06] Denktash says Turkish Cypriots not equal to Greek Cypriots

    In an interview to BBC's Greek service Turkish Cypriot leader, Raouf Denktash pointed out the reasons for his opposition to the Annan plan stressing that Cyprus' EU accession could be strong only with Turkey's EU accession, something he had already expressed in a letter to U.N. Secretary General, Kofi Annan. Denktash pointed out the Annan plan's philosophy is incorrect, as it doesn't confront Turkish Cypriots as equal partners with Greek-Cypriots.

    [07] Drop in ND's leade over Pasok

    In a new poll published yetserday, the Pasok party is still trailing opposition New Democracy in popularity.

    The Metron Analysis survey gave ND a 38.5 percent rating over PASOK's 31.7. The Communist Party came in third at 5.8 percent, followed by the Synaspismos Left Coalition at 3.6 percent. Giorgos Karadzaferis's ultra-conservative Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS) made a strong showing at 2.7 percent, just 0.3 percent below the threshold for representation in Parliament. The poll was conducted nationwide between October 16 and November 1.

    According to the poll, PM Simitis is still considered most fit to govern Greece, with a 2.1 percent lead over Karamanlis. Nevertheless, Karamanlis enjoyed slightly higher popularity rating than Simitis (54.3 over 51.4 percent).

    [08] Israeli troops kill boy, three militants in Gaza

    Israeli troops killed a 10-year-old Palestinian boy and three militants in the Gaza Strip today, but eased a West Bank blockade to try to bolster Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie and encourage peace moves. Palestinians said the removal of the Ein Arik checkpoint was the first concrete sign Israel was implementing a pledge it made on Wednesday to ease a blockade around West Bank cities.

    [09] US Black Hawk helicopter crashes in Iraq, 6 killed

    A U.S. Black Hawk helicopter crashed in Iraq today, killing all six people on board, and U.S. soldiers said it had probably been shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade. The U.S. military said two U.S. soldiers had also been killed in the northern city of Mosul, one in a bomb attack on Thursday morning and one in an ambush on Friday.

    In the meantime, reversing an earlier decision, Turkey said today it would not deploy troops to help the United States secure postwar Iraq after encountering strong opposition from the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council.
