  • [01] Spain says seizure of huge truck bomb averts massacre

    Spanish police averted a possible massacre by intercepting a van carrying more than 500 kg of explosives today that Basque separatist guerrillas ETA planned to detonate in Madrid. Two suspected ETA members were arrested in the early morning police operation, which came two weeks before a general election and 11 days after ETA declared a partial ceasefire limited to the north-eastern region of Catalonia.

    Democratic presidential contenders John Kerry and John Edwards battled during a boisterous debate today over trade policy and their ability to change Washington, but united to criticize President George W. Bushs handling of the crisis in Haiti. Two days before a potentially decisive "Super Tuesday" showdown in 10 states, the two prime contenders for the Democratic nomination noted the fall of Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and accused Bush of ignoring the Caribbean nation until it was too late.

    Faced with an armed rebellion and pressured by the United States and France, Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide left his troubled Caribbean country today, saying he wanted to avert bloodshed. The U.S. ambassador to Haiti said international military forces "will rapidly be in Haiti" and urged the rebels who forced out the president to lay down their arms. The United States may send forces to Haiti within days in order to deter rebels from grabbing power after Aristides resignation.

    The U.S. Coast Guard launched a massive sea search this morning for 18 missing crew after a chemical tanker carrying 11,000 tonnes of industrial ethanol exploded off the Virginia coast, killing three and wounding 6 in critical condition. Three Greek crewmen are among the missing crew-members. They are, Efstathios Kavouras, the ships captain, lieutenant Spiridonas Melles, and first mechanic, Athanasios Legantis.
