[01] Hellenic Republic passes on the presidency baton President with 279 Votes

Karolos Papoulias starts his term as President of the Hellenic Republic with record consensus, as in tonights vote in Parliament, he gained 279 votes. Voting in favour were MPs for ND and PASOK, while MPs for KKE and SYN simply declared their presence. Four MPs were absent from the process: Ahmed Ilhan, ND MP for Rodopi, Kostas Tsimas, PASOK MP for Kavala, Antonis Skilakos of KKE and independent MP Andreas Andrianopoulos. The first two, who were patients, as was Mr Skilakos, sent a letter to the Speaker of Parliament, Anna Psarouda-Benaki, stating that they would vote for Mr Papoulias. After the announcement of the result, the Speaker of Parliament visited Mr Papoulias at his office in Soutsou Street and announced to him that he had been elected to the presidency of the Hellenic Republic. Mr Papoulias will be sworn in on 12 March, which is when he will take up his duties.

"Our Political Culture Conquers Consensus"

Among those voting in favour of Karolos Papoulias were two of the three independent MPs, Stelios Papathemelis and Stefanos Manos, while Andreas Andrianopoulos stated that he would only vote for Mr Papoulias if asked to by the President of PASOK, Giorgos Papandreou, otherwise he was determined to vote against him.

The special festive convocation of the Plenary Session of Parliament began with the reading of the letters from the presidents of the parliamentary groups of ND Kostas Karamanlis and of PASOK Giorgos Papandreou, in which they proposed Karolos Papoulias as President of the Hellenic Republic.

This was followed by an open vote by calling out the names of the MPs, who either stated their preference for Mr Papoulias or simply stated, "present."

The convocation was concluded with the announcement of the result of the vote by the Speaker of Parliament, Anna Benaki-Psarouda. It was greeting by enthusiastic applause.

Following this, Mrs Benaki and the five deputy Speakers of Parliament Messrs Panagiotis Kosionis, Sotiris Hatziyakis, Giorgos Sourlas, Filippos Petsalnikos and Giannis Tragakis, went to Mr Papoulias office in Soutsou Street in Kolonaki, where they officially informed him of his election.

Mrs Benaki stressed that the new President is a reward for his path so far as a politician and as a man. "With great honour, I accept the feeling of responsibility," answered Mr Papoulias, and stressed that he would carry out his duties with respect for the opinions of all parties, while he described consensus as a conquest for Greek political culture.

"My communication with Greek citizens has taught me that political maturity and sincerity, moderation and sensitivity in public life are a collective matter, for us to create a better tomorrow for our country and build a society that is less selfish and more just," stressed Mr Papoulias.

"Does this mean that from today therell be no more Karolos and well start with President?" joked Mr Kosionis, while his colleagues Sotiris Hatziyakis, Giorgos Sourlas, Filippos Petsalnikos and Giannis Tragakis wished him "good luck", "strength" and an "iron will!"

Immediately following the conclusion of the process, a celebration began in Mr Papoulias village in the Prefecture of Ioannina, where with music and shots in the air, the residents celebrated the election of their fellow villager.

Good Wishes for Success

Speaking to NDs Parliamentary Group this morning, Kostas Karamanlis referred to the candidacy, stressing that it was a choice for boosting national unity. The Prime Minister praised Karolos Papoulias character and virtue, describing him as a man who served politics with responsibility and consensus, who has been equipped with knowledge and experience from his long office as Foreign Minister, which is necessary for the seat of President of the Hellenic Republic. He also added that Mr Papoulias is a modest man, who has proved that he can cooperate impeccably with political forces, avoiding political feuds.

"The choice we have made responds to the challenges of our times and serves the countrys interests, it is a choice of unity and power consensus," stated the Prime Minister and added that NDs choices formulate and unite views. "We are meeting at the common point of extent and modesty, at the heart of progress and social responsibility," he stated.

Mr Karamanlis also referred to the term of Kostis Stefanopoulos, stressing that he carried out his duties impeccably, serving with discretion and a high sense of responsibility.

Commenting on the result of tonights vote, the President of PASOK, Giorgos Papandreou, stated that he was sure that Karolos Papoulias would have a successful term as President of the Hellenic Republic.

"I am pleased with the election of Karolos Papoulias. I offer him my congratulations, I wish him good luck and I am sure that his term in office as President of the Hellenic Republic will be successful," stressed Mr Papandreou, who did not comment on the absence of Andreas Andrianopoulos, while he said only: "the vote for the President of the Republic is a vote of conscience."

The Minister for Development Dimitris Sioufas described the election of Mr Papoulias as "a responsible choice of real consensus that puts an end to past divisions."

Earlier, SYNs parliamentary spokesman, Fotis Kouvelis, stated that SYN MPs chose not to vote for Mr Papoulias, as they consider that the candidacy is part of a consensus of a two-party political system. "Our stance is to highlight and project our objection to the two-party consensus that is expressed through the election of the President of the Republic," concluded Mr Kouvelis.

Karolos Papoulias will be the eighth President of the Hellenic Republic since the Greek state was formed and the sixth since the junta dictatorship.

[02] At least 38 dead and 70 injured Truck Causes Deaths

Today was a day of joy for Angola, but it was to become a day of mourning. At least 38 people were sent to their deaths by a truck, while at least another 70 people were injured. The vehicle, whose brakes had obviously failed, rammed into the crowd in Lubango in the south of the country whilst thousands of people were watching the parade for the carnival, which is currently being celebrated in Angolas large cities. According to information, there are children amongst the dead, while the authorities have not confirmed the number of the injured. Among the dead, there are many who were killed immediately, while several died on the way to hospitals and medical centers.

Grief on City Streets

Immediately following the accident, tragic scenes unfolded, with parents searching for their children and others seeing their loved ones lying on the road, while others ran to the city morgues, hoping not to find any of their loved ones there. "The residents of Lubango are shocked by the accident," said the report on Angola Church radio. The police was forced to shoot into the air in order to disperse the angry crowd who were moving threateningly towards the scene of the accident and towards hospitals, while the provincial government convened an emergency meeting to discuss the accident.

[03] Rice's Message from Paris Preparing the Way for Bush

Condoleezza Rice calls on Europe to forget the bad feelings of the past and their differences, mainly regarding the war in Iraq. Speaking in Paris, the greatest social, political and ideological centre of resistance to the US in the West, the American Secretary of State brought George Bushs message in the best way possible. This refers to a united Europe allied to and not against the US. "History will judge us, not by our disagreements, but by our new achievements," stressed Rice, among other things, preparing the way for George Bushs visit to Europe this month.

French Guantanamo Prisoners Released

Condoleeza Rice called on European allies to cast their differences aside and open a new chapter in their relations. The head of American diplomacy asked Europe to work closely with the US to achieve new goals, for stability in Iraq and Afghanistan and peace in the Middle East.

"The US is ready to work together with Europe on matters of a common agenda, and Europe must be ready to work together with the US," stressed Rice, in an effort to close the rift that has opened in their relations with the war in Iraq.

In any case, it would seem that relations between the US and France have improved, with the French Foreign Minister stating earlier that Paris would like closer ties of cooperation with Washington.

In fact, according to information, shortly before Rices arrival in France, Paris and Washington agreed on the release of three French citizens who were held at Guantanamo in Cuba.

[04] Science's Great Opportunity From Dolly to Human Embryos

Questions regarding ethics, but hopes concerning the treatment of incurable diseases arise from cloning research. In Britain, Ian Wilmut, the "father" of Dolly, the first cloned sheep, has been given the green light from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority to clone embryos to study motor neurone disease (MND). This time, they will follow a different method. They will not isolate stem cells from cloned embryos, but they will clone embryos from patients who suffer from MND.

Different Methodology

The issue of human cloning for research purposes has arisen again in Europe, most particularly in Britain.

Six months after Professor Miodrag Stoikovic of the Human Genetics Institute at the University of Newcastle, the "father" of Dolly will clone human embryos for the purpose of finding a cure for neural diseases.

The method to be used is entirely different from that of his colleagues in Newcastle.

This time, there will be no isolation of stem cells from embryos who have been cloned in order to be used for transplants for people facing specific dysfunctions.

Professor Wilmut intends to clone embryos from patients who suffer from MND, in an effort to monitor the development of the disease from its early stages.

He will try out new treatments on these cells in order to see if they can halt the development of the disease.

Objections and Support

Professor Wilmuts activities have brought many objectors and supporters.

Professor Roger Penderson of the University of Cambridge spoke of an exciting development. " It will enable the disease to be studied throughout its development, and it is very likely that we will find a treatment," he stresses.

On the other hand: "Human cloning remains dangerous, undesirable and unnecessary.," stress representatives of Churches and other organizations.

Therapeutic Cloning Causes Divisions

Therapeutic cloning is entirely different from reproductive cloning, which aims to create a genetically identical human being. Therapeutic cloning creates embryos at a very early stage, from which stem cells are used in order to develop any kind of tissue, such as blood, nerve and muscle tissue.

Reactions from those opposed to therapeutic cloning are based on the fact that the possibility of an embryo becoming a human being in the future is destroyed.

And the big, crucial question on the table is whether or not an embryo consisting of 4-8 cells used in therapeutic cloning, is a viable person.

[05] Karamanlis' Message Zero Tolerance For Intrigue and Corruption

Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis seized the opportunity, on the occasion of ND Parliamentary Groups agenda for the election of President of the Republic, to send a clear message against the phenomena of vested interest and corruption. Mr Karamanlis stressed the Government supports all efforts of self-catharsis by making bold decisions. "No rust will corrode the pride of Greeks," he stressed. At the same time, he spoke of "corruption with roots in the past" thereby hinting at yesterdays comments by PASOK's President Giorgos Papandreou. "The citizens demand that a full stop be put to unlawful situations," said the Prime Minister and added that the people ask of the government "humility, honesty and zero tolerance" against continuing mistakes and stated his steadfast persistence for full purification. "We are fortifying the state against intrigue and sources of corruption. We support the institutions and the fulfilment of their mission, which has to be completed with transparency," he said. For the developments in the Justice department he confirmed the decisiveness of the government to pursue purification at any cost. The institution will be reinforced towards the context of self-control and self-protection.

[06] Regarding Corruption in Justice Revelations Continue

The Supreme Courts investigation on the extra judicial network is in progress. First Instance Chairman, Evangelos Kalousis, is referred to the Supreme Court Plenary Session on the question of definitive dismissal for participation in sex scandals and trafficking of foreign women. What is more, he has been seen on a private yacht with another First Instance Judge involved in Stock Market cases. So far, the Supreme Court is investigating the cases of 30 judges, while according to legal cycles the referral of judges on the question of definitive dismissal will reach 10. In the meantime, Appellate Assistant Public Prosecutor Nikos Athanasopoulos, who has already been referred to the Supreme Courts Plenary Session on the question of definitive dismissal, appeared before Supreme Court judge Christos Baltas but provided no explanations for charges pending against him. On the contrary, he received a copy of the brief and will appear before Mr Baltas tomorrow. Mr Athanasopoulos claimed that Archimandrite Iakovos Giosakis had implicated him in his ignorance.

Leonidas Stathis Testifies Tomorrow

What is more, First Instance Chairman Leonidas Stathis will testify on Wednesday before Supreme Court Assistant Public Prosecutor Giorgos Sanidas, who is investigating the penal part of extra judicial networks. It should be noted that Mr Stathis has also been referred to the Supreme Court on the question of definitive dismissal.

[07] Archimandrite Giosakis in Custody

After a marathon session, the Piraeus Court in Chambers decided on Tuesday morning to remand Archimandrite Iakovos Giosakis in custody. Within the day the Archimandrite will be taken to Korydallos prison for the case of illegal antique trading of more than 100 Byzantine icons from a monastery in Kythira, where he served in the 90s. In the meantime, the Continuous Holy Synod has been convening since early morning in the light of continuous charges against senior clergymen. The meeting is also expected to focus on the second recommendation letter of Archbishop Christodoulos to judicial authorities, while he was still a Metropolitan Bishop, with which he defended drug dealer Apostolos Vavilis. Evangelos Antonaros, deputy government spokesperson, referred to the crisis in the Church and commenting on European Parliamentarian Mr Varvitsiotis proposal to separate the Church from the State, he said "there is no such question for the government."

Examiner Appointed for Theoklitos

The Synod has proceeded with the appointment of an interrogator for the case of Metropolitan Bishop Theoklitos of Thessaliotida, despite the fact that they considered the explanations provided as sufficient. Xanthi Metropolitan Bishop Panteleimonas has been appointed examiner and he will soon proceed with relevant interrogations that will shed more light on the case. Metropolitan Bishop Stefanos of Trifyllia has also been asked to submit a written statement regarding the indecent photographs published in the Press.

At the same time, the Holy Synod forbade the clergy to appear in public discussions.

A strong reaction to the ban came from the Metropolitan Bishop of Zakynthos.

In a written statement, the Bishop accuses the Archbishop of despotic views.

"It is undisputedly proven that during the years of the dictatorship, the archbishop did not only study his lessons, but also how to gag the freedom of the individual," he states in his letter and wonders if the ban will apply to the Archbishop and his spokesmen. At the same time, he asks Christodoulos "how many certificates of good morals for drug traffickers and Satanists can be given out by us annually, and perhaps the immediate convocation of the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece is now a one-way path."

Vavilis Under the Microscope

Today, Apogevmatini newspaper published a copy of Vavilis' document submitted to the Israeli Supreme Court, in which he stated that he was Erineos' supporter prior to his election "on demand of the supreme Greek religious leader, whom he respected and admired."

Vavilis had been sentenced to 13 years imprisonment for import, trafficking and possession of 1.5 kilos of heroine, although his sentence was suspended for 15 years. Since then, he has skipped bail and is wanted by Interpol.

The Assistant Public Prosecutor of the Supreme Court is carefully examining the case and will look into the reasons behind his suspended sentence.

It should be noted that Giosakis has been detained since Friday because of the dispute over his custody between examiner Antigoni Tzelepi and first instance judge Grigoris Peponis, who wanted to detain Giosakis. Mr Peponis stated his case with a 20-page letter addressed to the three judges of the court.

In the meantime, this evening Archbishop Christodoulos recommended that his listeners pay attention to whom they help. This came in his address to the chairpeople and members of diocesan Poor Funds in the Athens Archbishopric.

"Be careful of whom you feed, whom you help, because if in the future they turn out to be criminals, they will ask you for guarantees," he stressed.

Moreover, he described the events of the last few days as "an illogical theatre," and went on, speaking to the guests at the event, stressing that some people have targeted the Church. "Nasty people dug out evidence and letters from the past, but they are being made ridiculous, because we have our embrace open and give love," he said and added "I have my conscience clear, because I have learnt how to give, like the rest, and help people," underlined the Archbishop.

At the same time, as she came out of Parliament after the election of the President of the Hellenic Republic, the Minister for Education Mrs Giannakou stated that "instances of corruption in various countries are nothing new, especially in closed systems, and of course the relation between State and Church does not mean that the scene would change. Generally in a democracy all can be discussed at the right time."

[08] OSE Appeal Heard Today OSE Workers Will Not Back Down

OSE workers state that they are determined to go ahead with the 24-hour strike which has been announced for Thursday 10 February. They are reacting against the division of OSE (Greek National Railway Company) into infrastructure and use sectors, despite the fact that the Ministry of Transport has assured them that their work and pension rights will not be affected. In the meantime, today the members of the Panhellenic Railway Workers Federation (POS) held a Press Conference, in which they criticized both the leaders of OSE as well as the Ministry of Transport, while trade unionists announced their decision to hold the strike, even if the court, to which OSE administration has appealed, judges it illegal. The appeal, which has been submitted by OSE administration, in order for the strike to be declared illegal, was heard today.

Solidarity from ERGOSE Workers

In the meantime, solidarity with POS was expressed by workers with ERGOSE, daughter company of OSE, who also consider that the division of the companys activities will have negative consequences both on the railway and on the economy. For this reason, they state that rival companies should not be created within the OSE Group, and every effort should be exhausted to use the current daughter companies, both in terms of the manpower and the technology which has been developed.

[09] Historic Truce in Middle East

Palestinians and Israelis came to a final agreement on Tuesday to cease fire in an effort to end bloody clashes that torment the Middle East. The agreement was achieved during the summit at the Sharm el-Sheikh Egyptian resort. The Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas estimated that the truce, which will be put to effect shortly, will lead to a "new era of peace and hope," while Israeli PM Ariel Sharon pledged to immediately stop operations against the Palestinian people. The talks were also attended by Egyptian President Mubarak and King Abdullah of Jordan. Hamas announced that the truce only binds the Palestinian Authority and went on to add that they will not cease fire if Israel does not release all Palestinian prisoners.

Mutual Ceasefire

"I have agreed with the Israeli PM, Ariel Sharon, to set aside all acts of violence against the Israelis and the Palestinians, wherever they may take place," said Mahmud Abbas addressing the summit.

Israeli PM's statements were on the same wavelength and Mr Sharon stressed that "Israel will cease military action against all Palestinians."

After the end of talks, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit told reporters at the summit that Egypt and Jordan would soon be returning their ambassadors to Israel after a four-year absence.

Ariel Sharon's spokesperson said that the Israeli PM had invited Mahmud Abbas to visit his estate in Negev, South Israel, "very soon."

At the same time, he expressed the hope that the two leaders would also meet in Ramallah, the headquarters of the Palestinian Authority.

From Amman, from where he will return to Palestine, Mahmud Abbas stated that "dialogue will start again next week," while he underlined that he has called for the formation of "a joint Israeli and Palestinian committee, which will examine the criteria based on which Israel will decide to release Palestinian prisoners."

Israel decided to release 900 Palestinians, but as the Palestinian President stresses "we believe that a greater number of prisoners should be released. " Moreover, Mr Abbas confirmed Israels withdrawal from five Palestinian cities and the agreement on his behalf for the Palestinian Authority to construct a port.

International Satisfaction

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan greeted the announcement of the ceasefire warmly. "I believe that the joint announcement of the ending of violence after four years of death and suffering offers a chance to return to the peace process," stated Mr Annan. In fact, he stressed that the "active participation" of the Egyptian president Mubarak and the King of Jordan Abdallah II in this very important announcement will lead to a "fair, viable and total peace in the coming crucial months."

Britain and Germany expressed their satisfaction. British Foreign Secretary Jack Straws reaction to the truce announcement was immediate. Mr Straw expressed the belief that the peace process "is back on the right track," thus saluting the truce agreement, which he described as a "new beginning."

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder spoke of a "significant step" and expressed the hope that both sides would continue to progress in this direction.

Similarly, EU High Commissioner for Foreign Policy, Xavier Solana, expressed satisfaction to Ariel Sharon and Mr Abbas and "urged" them to continue dialogue to realize the dream of peace in the Middle East region.

Amnesty International called on both sides to turn the hopes for peace into a "continuous reality" adding that the leaders of both sides should work in the direction of protecting human rights. In the meantime, Norway called for a donor conference to be held to offer aid to the Palestinians.

Oslo chairs an international team of donors who aim to offer aid to the Palestinians.

Mr Solana noted that "the time has come for many things to happen, in the economy, in aid to the Palestinians to help them improve their police," and concluding he repeated that the EU wishes to assist the Palestinians in building political structures which will lead to the creation of a Palestinian state.

[10] Victory Even With 1-0

In a Press conference today, Otto Rehhagel underlined the particular significance of a win for Greece in tomorrows match against Denmark. As the German coach said, the three points will balance the score in the group and decide the future of the Greek national team. With this logic, he concluded that victory is essential, even if it is with 1-0. "The match will determine what is to come. Our aim is to score a goal, at any point in the game. However, we also need to be patient in this match. If we were to have a closed game and won 1-0, I would be very pleased." Sticking to the tradition he has set, Rehhagel did not reveal how he would fill the gap created by the absence of Michalis Kapsis. "As I said, we are flexible, we can react with Kyrgiakos, Goumas and Katsouranis. As for strategy and team standings, in any case, I never discuss this before the game," the German coach responded to the relevant question.

Teamwork is the Key

When asked who the key players were for the match in question, Rehhagel again answered in his own way, without naming them, but stressing: "One single player can never decide a whole game." He then added: "Did you see what happened with Ronaldinho, who is the best player in the world? Because of him, Barcelona lost the match the other day (NB against Atletico Madrid). The Danes are very good players, like for example the Laudrup brothers." On the subject of what would decide the match, he noted: "Basically, I think that the game will be decided in individual battles. Also, we should reduce our mistakes during the game. We should not make the mistakes we made in Albania."

Nervousness is Positive

Referring to the players, he expressed his satisfaction with the fact they all came from the countries where they play ready for action and made a good impression on him, while he admitted that nerves can sometimes spur players on. "I am very pleased. The players who came back from abroad have made a very good impression on me, and that is important, because we have a very difficult game. Its positive for there to be nerves, because that is how it should be. Nerves, in combination with our 40 thousand fans, create an ideal situation. We are looking at what is going on now and not at whether or not this is an ideal moment to face our opponents, because the players are arriving from a rest period, and so on. Where I place great importance is on our players being at 100% of their abilities in order to get the desired result. They must be on a good day tomorrow. Since I have been with the Greek national team, even in friendly matches, the players have done their best and that has made a good impression on me."

[11] Greece Candidate for European Softball

On the urging of the International Federation, Greece will submit its candidacy for the European Clubs Softball Championship, which is to be held this August. This was announced today by the deputy minister for Sport, Giorgos Orfanos, who met this morning with the president and general secretary of the international federation, Mr Don Porter and Andy Loechner respectively. Also present at the meeting were the president of the Greek federation, Theodoros Kollias, and the general secretary, Chrisanthi Skiada.

Softball on School Curriculum

After the meeting, Mr Orfanos stressed: "We were delighted and satisfied to receive the international and Greek softball federations in a meeting, which mainly aimed at promoting the sport in our country. Thinking of the wonderful venues in Elliniko, we exchanged views on how to include the sport on the school sports curriculum and in the Greek Education system in general. We also spoke of hosting event such as the European Clubs Championship, for which we will compete for August 2005. Also, on matches between teams from the wider Balkans region, as many of these teams already have a well-developed softball programme. In general, we agreed that as part of making use of the venues and the Olympic Heritage, it is worth making some steps in progress."

Mr Porter stressed "We had a discussion with Mr Orfanos, as well as the people from the Greek Softball Federation, on how to use the Olympic Venue in Elliniko, not only for softball matches, but for other event too. Mr Orfanos gave us some ideas on how the sport could be developed. The most basic regards the effort to introduce the sport into the school sports curriculum."

[12] Firefighters With Inspiration Snow Extinguisher

Firefighters in the Romanian city of Sibiu proved to be extremely imaginative, as they managed to rescue an old woman from the flames that had engulfed her house by using snowballs. The reason for this truly original rescue was the bad weather conditions in the area that did not allow them to reach the womans house. Although the Fire Brigade rushed to the scene after receiving a call from neighbors, firefighters seemed unable to do anything as snow had become an impassible barrier. However, divine inspiration saved the day! Firefighters decided to turn their barrier into a rescue tool and started throwing snowballs. Not at each other of course, but at the poor ladys house. The fire was extinguished and the old lady was rescued, while they became the heroes of the day.

[13] Checks on recent broadcasts NCRT Displeased with Church Crisis

The way in which the church crisis, which has arisen over the last few days, has been broadcast has triggered an intense reaction from the National Council for Radio and Television (NCRT), which has released a statement expressing its displeasure.
