[01] Critical Meeting Over Eirinaios' Future Eyes Turned to Phanar

Today a critical meeting, presided by the Ecumenical Patriarch will take place in Phanar, and determinative of the stance the Greek Orthodox Churches will keep on the issue of Jerusalem Patriarch Eirinaios. The meeting will also be attended by Alexandria Patriarch, Theodoros, while the verdict of the Patriarchal delegation that visited Jerusalem last week is also expected to be announced. The cause is if Patriarch Bartholomew will advert Eirinaios on Sunday, since the Administrative Committee of the Jerusalem Patriarchate asks that the advert of the deposed Patriarch should be stopped.

"Do Not Advert Him"

On this issue, Archbishop Christodoulos had a telephone discussion with Bartholomew, while he cancelled his visits to Karditsa and Larisa. As it was made known, Christodoulos will not perform Mass on Sunday, in order to not take a stance in the demand of the Jerusalem Patriarchate Administrative Committee to stop the advert.

In the meantime, Prime Minister Karamanlis in his speech in Parliament yesterday, asked Eirinaios to rise up to the circumstances in order to safeguard the Greek-Orthodox character of the Jerusalem Patriarchate

[02] Many Protestors Dead City of Andidjan Closed-Off

Since this morning, the city of Andidjan in eastern Uzbekistan has been closed-off, and counts several hundreds of dead according to at the scene witnesses, since the police and army have encircled the city. In the meantime, an official from Kyrgyzstan stated to the AFP that more than 600 Uzbeks, most of them injured, passed through the Kyrgyzstan borders, after the clashes that broke out yesterday. A journalist of the AFP stated that at the scene witnesses of the suppression of the armed revolt against the regime of President Islam Karimov, speak of 200, 300 and even more bodies, while the shots continue to ring in the center of the city of eastern Uzbekistan.

Civilians Killed

"There are at least 50 dead," stated the doctor that works in the central hospital of Andidjan. He also stated that the injured are 96, mainly protestors and security services men.

The bodies that the correspondent saw lying in the streets are mainly men and teenagers and most of them have been shot. According to at the scene witnesses these people were killed by soldiers, upon their return from a protest in support of the insurgents that took place in the square of regional administration, near the Town Hall.

Witnesses support that the law and order forces carried many bodies outside of the city this dawn. This information has not been yet cross referenced.

"I went to find my children that were protesting at the headquarters of regional administration. Soldiers aboard a tank opened fire against the crowd," stated 53-year-old Asim Karimov who was injured by the shots. The military men "continued to fire against the crowd which fell to the ground," he added.
