    Greece welcomed 2006 with spectacular events in all regions of the country with the hope that the New Year will bring health, happiness and prosperity to all. In his message for the New Year, President of the Repulbic Karolos Papoulias voiced the expectation that 2006 will be "a year of progress and growth, with continuous efforts for the improvement of the Greek citizens quality of life," while he also referred to our fellow beings with health problems, away from their loved ones and facing issues which do not allow them to celebrate the holidays. In their New Year messages the political parties leaders wished for 2006 to bring happiness, health and prosperity, while on New Years Eve they listened to carols from many regions of Greece sang by traditional groups.

    Wishes by Political Leaders

    Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis referred to a new beginning for the country with great changes and reforms, concluding: "We welcome the New Year with self-confidence and optimism; with faith to our countrys abilities, as well as faith to the Greek women and men. I wish a Happy New Year filled with health and progress to all."

    On his part, President of PASOK George Papandreou in his message referred to the important progress the country made in the past and voiced the certainty that "the future will bring changes, needed by the land, with respect to the public interest and the citizens." "I wish for all the Greeks in Greece and abroad, to all living in Greece, Greeks and immigrants, personal and kindred happiness," concluded Mr Papandreou.

    KKE called on the workers, urging them to create a united front, claiming the affluence they produce.

    In closing, President of SYN Alekos Alavanos and the Expatriate Department wished for all Greeks, home and away, health, happiness and prosperity in the New Year and voiced the hope that 2006 will be a year of peace, progress and social justice for mankind.
