    By Mary Lou Tzempelikou

    Sources: Reuters

US President George W. Bush praised Iraqi politicians on Saturday for standing firm against videotaped threats by al Qaeda's leader in Iraq as they work to forge a unity government. "The terrorists clearly recognize the threat that the new unity government poses to their dark plans for Iraq and the broader Middle East," Bush said in his weekly radio address. Meanwhile, George Bush said a unity government would mark "the beginning of a new chapter in America's involvement" in Iraq three years after a U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein. "As Iraqis continue to make progress toward a democracy that can govern itself, defend itself and sustain itself, more of our troops can come home with the honour they have earned," Bush said. He has refused to set a timetable for withdrawing America's 133,000 troops.

[06] At the Age of 97 John Kenneth Galbraith Passed Away

    30 Apr 2006 18:24:00

Sources: New York Times - ANA - Reuters

Canadian-born John Kenneth Galbraith, one of the most influential economists of the 20th century, breathed his last in Cambridge Hospital, Massachusetts, aged 97. As per the New York Times, he was one of the most widely read authors in the history of economics, having written over 30 books. His most famous book, The Affluent Society (1958), which became a bestseller, outlines how post-World War II America was becoming wealthy in the private sector but remained poor in the public sector, lacking social and physical infrastructure, and perpetuating income disparities. Galbraith was heavily influenced by British economist John Maynard Keynes, who advocated government spending to reduce unemployment, while he also supported a much shorter work week, the womens liberation movement and an international council to help the victims of man-made disasters.

    A Few Words about Galbraith

John Kenneth Galbraith was born 15 October 1908, on a farm in Ontario, Canada.

He received a science degree from the University of Toronto in 1931 and three years later earned a doctorate in economics at the University of California and began teaching there.

His life at Harvard began as a tutor in 1934 but three years later he moved to Cambridge University, England, on a fellowship.

Galbraith married the former Catherine Atwater in 1937, the same year that he became a US citizen. They had three sons.

He taught economics at Princeton University in 1939 and 1940 and in 1941 joined the Office of Price Controls. Later, Galbraith said, his office had started with no price controls and by 1943 almost every price was under control.

In 1949 Galbraith received his appointment as an economics professor at Harvard.

Galbraith was a close friend and early supporter of President Kennedy, who named him ambassador to India from 1961 to 1963, the only years he did not spend at Harvard.

Galbraith also wrote speeches for two other Democratic candidates for the presidency, the late Adlai Stevenson in 1952 and 1956, and Sen. George McGovern in 1972.

In 1967 he told a Chicago conference that the United States had made a serious mistake in becoming involved in the Vietnam War and should take steps to withdraw.

    [07] Bloody Attack in Iraq

    30 Apr 2006 18:58:00

    By Anna Kourti

    Sources: Reuters - ANA

Three contractors for a British company were killed when a roadside bomb struck their convoy in a street in southern Baghdad. A British Embassy spokesperson confirmed the information, but did not reveal the nationality of the victims. Two other British citizens were injured in similar circumstances on Saturday in Al-Kurna, 45km NW of Basra. The two men were transferred to a hospital in Saiba and have escaped danger.

Earlier, the Iraqi presidency announced that a ceasefire agreement was reached, after talks between seven armed groups. Based on the official announcement, issued and signed by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, Iraqi observers believe that the talks were attended by Sunni armed factions, as well as US officials. Some of the groups declared they would suspend their activities.

AEK closed the gap with Olympiacos to three points in the rankings, after defeating Apollon in Kalamaria by 1-0. [13] OFI's Future Uncertain

    30 Apr 2006 21:16:00

    By Vasilis Kalpinos

OFI will play the match that will decide whether it will get relegated or not on home ground. After defeating PAOK by 2-1, it will all come down to the match day 30, when it will play against Levadiakos in Pankritio Stadium. OFI has 28 points, as opposed to 31 for Levadiakos (which defeated Olympiacos on Sunday) and will need a two-goal victory next week, as it had been defeated by 1-0 in the first round. If it wins by a one-goal difference, and provided Panionios defeats Egaleo, Sifakis team will have to play a decider against Levadiakos. On the other hand, if the Panionios-Egaleo match ends in a tie, OFI only needs a victory, irrespective of the goals. The scorers in this match were Nwafor (43) and Davidson (60) for OFI, while Giasemakis scored a goal in the 75 for PAOK.

Referee: Tsikinis (Messinia) Yellow Cards: Konstantinidis, Khachatryan, Anastasiadis, Arabatzis

    By Stathis Petropoulos

Levadiakos took a significant step towards staying in Division 1 of the Greek football championship after defeating Olympiacos by 3-2. So the Piraeus team suffered its third consecutive championship loss, while Levadiakos can either win or draw against OFI next week in Heraklio in order to keep its place in the premier division, irrespective of the result in the match between Panionios and Egaleo. As for todays game, the home team made an amazing start, as it took Olympiacos by surprise, scoring 3 goals in the first 17 minutes! In the 17, Rusev scored the third goal for the home team, with a kick that surprised everyone. Olympiacos started off the second half just as powerfully as Levadiakos had in the first. In the 48, Maric closed the gap to 3-1, while in the 60 Konstantinou scored the second goal for Olympiacos.
