    Violent Incidents in Belgrade

    21 Feb 2008 18:42:00

Serbians staged a big rally in Belgrade to protest against Kosovos independence, which they consider the heartland of their history and culture. The demonstration was organized by the Srbian leadership with the slogan "Kosovo is Serbia". Some 200.000 protesters took to the streets waving Serbian flags and chanting slogans "we will never give up Kosovo", "Kosovo is Serbia". "As long as we live, Kosovo is Serbia," Prime Minister, Vojislav Kostunica told the crowd from a stage in front of the old Yugoslav parliament building in Belgrade while nationalist leader, Tomislav Nikolic said "Do not play with Serbian people patience. Do not provoke us". In the meantime, riot police are on the alert, however, the situation is getting out of control as they can not avert many violent incidents during which at least 30 civilians and 15 policemen have been injured. Serbian war veterans staged a demonstration today at a post on Serbia-Kosovo borders. Protesters threw stones at Kosovo security forces and set fire to car tires.

    US Embassy Attacked

Serbian protesters attempted to break into the building housing the US embassy in Belgrade, cheered on by crowds outside. The protesters set fire on part of it and caused damage while riot police were not there to protect the building. The embassy closed for safety reasons while according to eyewitnesses smoke is still billowing from the building. The US State Department called Serb authorities to protect US diplomatic facilities in Belgrade.
