Top Bosnian Serb war crimes fugitive Radovan Karadzic was arrested Monday evening by the authorities. A preliminary examination was concluded in the early morning hours today, the first step before his extradition to the International Court at the Hague. The Examiner refused to give any details on the interrogation, describing it confidential. His lawyer, Svetozar Vujacic, told reporters Karadzic was arrested on Friday night, while taking a bus between two suburbs of Belgrade, and had been held for three days. Vujacic also said that Karadzic, 63, who examined by a doctor, was calm and dignified, adding that he will be detained at the court before he is extradited to the Hague.

The International Community Welcomes his Arrest

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon praised Serbian authorities for taking a "decisive step toward ending impunity" of those indicted for crimes in Balkan conflicts. "This is a historic moment for the victims, who have waited 13 years for Mr. Karadzic to be brought to justice," he said in a statement released by the United Nations. The EU, initially worried about where the Socialists stood on the Hague tribunal, welcomed the capture, which apparently took place in Belgrade.

Some officials said they expected Karadzic to be taken swiftly to The Hague, but a senior judicial source in Serbia told Reuters he would likely stay in the country for at least three days while his lawyers appeal to fight his extradition Karadzic is still seen by militant nationalists as a national savior following the collapse of Yugoslavia.

Bosnian Serb wartime president Radovan Karadzic was wanted for planning and ordering Europes worst atrocities since World War Two. Karadzic was charged with authorizing the slaughter of 11,000 of their fellow citizens.

    [02] Government Meeting on Landfills

    22 Ιουλ 2008 09:10:0

Karamanlis will chair a government meeting on landfills at 11:00 Tuesday. The meeting will focus on refuse management in Attica, in view of an imminent fine by the EU. Specifically, Greece is threatened to pay a 34,000-euro fine per day for each illegal landfill. Meanwhile, as per a report written by the Civilians Counsel, the main causes of fires are landfills and the outdated PPC (Public Power Corporation) network. It also reports that last years tragic experience has not been utilized in the proper way so that measures are taken for the prevention of such disasters in the future.
