    Greece is shocked over the unprecedented crime that took place on Santorini Sunday, when a 30-year-old man cut his wifes head and then wandered in the streets with her head in her hands. The coroner believes the woman was not dead when her husband cut her throat. The Health Ministry is sending psychologists to Santorini in support of the inhabitants, who eye witnessed the crime.

    Culprit's Father Testifies

    As per coroner Nikos Karakoukis, the culprits wife had been stabbed 10 times and was still alive when beheaded. She did not react as she was taken by surprise.

    Meanwhile, the culprits father testified in Alexandroupolis today.

    As he said as his son met with psychological problems 10 years ago he did not finish his military service. He also received medical treatment until 2000. Eight years ago he met with his future wife and lived in her parents house. They got married a year ago and have been living in Santorini since last September. His wife worked as a teacher, while the culprit worked as a cook. As he used to quarrel with his employers, he was out of job several times.

    Last Friday he visited with his wife the Health Centre to receive psychological support, as the culprit had been tense and suffered of insomnia lately. When advised to visit a psychologist of a non-governmental organization he refused to do so.

    On Saturday he asked the owner of a hotel to continue working there and his wife, something which he refused to do as his wife was a civil servant. This drove the culprit mad. He resigned and left with his wife, who had been trying to calm him down.

    The crime took place the following day.

    In Critical Condition

    The culprit is still in the intensive care unit of Gennimatas Hospital. The man has been injured in the abdomen, the chest and liver by the policemens bullets. The two women-doctors health has been described stable

    Meawhile, the young woman, who had been injured slightly by a ricochet, is in Agia Olga Hospital. The policeman, who had participated in the culprits arrest was slightly injured and had been taken to the same hospital as the young woman.

    In relation to ND ruling party cadres disagreements on Mr Alogoskoufis economic policy, government officials offered their support to the minister of Economy and Finance. In reply to questions set after the Government Committee meeting, government spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos stressed that the government proceeds on the basis of its commitments and programme. In parallel, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dora Bakoyannis reported that politicians are judged by their work. Finally, in reply to the criticism launched against him Mr Alogoskoufis stated that as a minister he should implement the government policy for development, employment and social cohesion, adding that that is what he will continue doing.

    [03] Abramopoulos Meets Father of 20Y/O

    New Evidence on 20Y/O Australian Murder

    Fresh evidence has come up in relation to the death of the 20-year-old Australian in Mykonos. Complementary felony charges are expected to be pressed against those responsible for the fatal injury of the unfortunate Australian. Specifically, the detained will be charged with voluntary homicide and the other three accused will be charged with homicide attempt. In parallel, the Examiner and Prosecutor believe that the reconstruction of the scene would shed light to all details.

    Health Minister, Dimitris Avramopoulos met this morning with Oliver Zamit, father of 20Y/O Australian, whose organs had been transplanted to four people. The minister thanked Mr Zamit, who is leaving now Greece, for his bravery and generous behaviour.

    Meanwhile, Tourism Development Minister Aris Spiliotopoulos has asked from Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos to boost security and safety, as well as security forces on Mykonos Island.

    [04] No Extension

    To National Cadastre Deadline

    In an interview with NET television channel program "Proti Grammi" the President of the National Cadastre S.A, Hristos Goulas said that there will be no extension for submission of documents for the registration of properties. Mr. Goulas said that September, 30 deadline leaves satisfactory time for all property owners to register their properties. Proof for submission of application for the issue of building permits and transfer of property are accepted to avoid issue of relevant certificate whose cost is 5 euros.

    [05] Quake in Southern China

    A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale has hit Sichuan province in China. Specialists believe it is an aftershock of the 12 May quake that killed at least 70,000 people, announced the US Geological Observatory. There is no information available on casualties and material damage. The epicentre of the quake was 1,253 kilometres south-west of Beijing and the quake measured 7.9 on the Richter scale.

    [06] Focus on Self-government Finances

    The objective of the plan the Interior Ministry is preparing is fewer and stronger municipalities. As per Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos the dialogue with KEDKE (Central Union of Municipalities and Communities of Greece) will conclude soon, adding that the administrative reform will be combined with financial measures the ministry will take for self governments. However, KEDKE President Nikitas Kaklamanis said that he will participate in a dialogue provided self-government finances are streamlined. Referring to the reactions on Kapodistrias Plan II, government spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos pointed out that the government is cooperating with KEDKE and ENAE (Union of Prefectural Authorities of Greece) so that self-government across Greece become more flexible and effective, pumping out funds from the Commission and utilizing their own funds.

    [07] Digital TV on Final Stretch

    As per Minister of State Th. Roussopoulos, the first trial TV digital programme will be broadcast on 1 November 2008. The objective is the boosting of regional TV stations, allowing them to be self-dependent and host commercial advertisements. Regarding the issuing of permits to TV and Radio stations, Mr Roussopoulos stated that what remains to be done is for the presidential decree to be signed, as well as two ministerial decisions. Then, the National TV-Radio Council will have its say.

    He also reported that ERT has already been running pilot programmes, referring also to the issue of digital TV. He said that Greece secured 107 frequencies in 1961; however nothing has happened since then.

    In 2004, Greece secured 2,500 frequencies at the Geneva International Conference, followed by the hammering out of the frequency charter for TVs and Radios, as well as for the Parliaments TV and Radio.

    [08] 35yo Gunman to the Prosecutor

    The 35-year-old man, who created turmoil in Herakion yesterday when he began shooting several times against policemen, he will be led to the Prosecutor today. The man was wandering in Filothei streets, Heraklion with his rifle when he fled at the sight of a patrol car. When the police tried to arrest him he shot against them, injuring one. Then reinforcements arrived, but the 35-year-old man continued shooting against them and running in the streets, where civilians were trying to cover themselves from his shots. Then, the man forced a motorcyclist to carry him to Atsalenios area. Finally, he was disarmed by an EKAM policeman.

    [09] Rescue Operation in Progress in Karditsa

    A rescue operation is taking place now in a three-kilometre-long tunnel in Agorasia, Argithea, Karditsa. Rescuers are trying to free seven workers. The works are related to the diversion of Acheloos River. All workers are well. They were cut off in the entrance of the tunnel when a truck carrying materials caught fire. The thick smoke from the burning truck prevented them from leaving the tunnel.

    [10] Iran Delivers its Answer

    Iran has delivered to EU officials its answer on the proposal of the "Six" in relation to its nuclear programme today, reported Fars News Agency. Western officials, who are afraid that Iran wishes to build a nuclear bomb despite Tehrans denial, have been told that Iran would answer today.

    The culprit of the murder case in Santorini is still in the intensive care unit of Gennimatas Hospital. The man has been injured in the abdomen, the chest and liver by the policemens bullets. The two women-doctors health has been described stable. Meawhile, the young woman, who had been injured slightly by a ricochet, is in Agia Olga Hospital. The policeman, who had participated in the culprits arrest was slightly injured and had been taken to the same hospital as the young woman. Although the public cannot comprehend how a quarrel between the couple ended in a murder, the culprit was tense four days before the murder. As NET revealed, he had visited with his wife the Health Centre to receive psychological support.

    Meanwhile, the local society remains stunned at the savage crime that has taken place on Santorini.

    Two new persons not in the political stage- emerged involved in the Siemens case after the opening of bank accounts abroad. Movement in "Placid Blue" company bank account, managed by former Siemens executive Mihalis Hristoforatos, indicates the identity of the two new persons. The two persons emerge as recipients of 1.100.000 euros transferred by "Placid Blue" into an account of an offshore company opened in a branch of a London Bank.

    [13] Tagarades Landfill Opens

    Thermi, Mikra and Basilika municipal councils agreed on the opening of Tagarades landfill, consenting to a refuse collection plan approved by the Local Administration Union of broader Thessaloniki area. "Our struggle indicated that there is a problem with the management of refuse from hospitals, industrial waste and debris. However we have selected the road of consent and dialogue to avert problems in the city and protect the Mavrorahi new Landfill project" said Thermi Mayor, Thodoros Papadopoulos. According to the plan of the Union of Local Administration for the broader Thessaloniki area collection of refuse from the Kalamaria, Mikra, Thermi, Basilika and Thermaikos municipalities will start this morning. The other municipalities members of the Union will send their garbage to Mavrorahi landfill.
