  • [01] TIME: Illegal Migration a Problem for Greece

In a long article TIME magazine refers to the grave problem of illegal migration Greece faces. At the same time, the sessions on the Meeting on Migration concluded in the UN today. Attending the meeting was Deputy Interior Minister Athanasios Nakos. The attendants will meet again in Athens in November 2009 at the Third World Forum on Migration and Development.

The article refers amongst others to the illegal immigrants from Asia and the Middle East as they use Greek islands as Mytilene as a bridge to Europe.

Journalist Jeff Israely describe a patrol of the Greek coast guard during the night, during which 10 illegal immigrants from Afghanistan were arrested.

The article hosts Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos' statements which speak of 150,000 illegal immigrants in 2008. It also carries the statements of Alexandros Zavos, President of the Institute of Migration Policy, as per which Turkey is not cooperating on the issue. He states that the illegal immigrants who arrive from Turkey do not help the situation and instead raises the people's dislike to illegal immigrants.

[02] UN Deploys More Troops in Congo

    World -

The United Nations Security Council has agreed to send 3,000 more troops to the Democratic Republic of Congo following renewed fighting in the country's east. The increase means the peacekeeping mission, Monuc, will have about 20,000 troops and police on the ground - the biggest UN force of its kind. However, correspondents say diplomats admit they do not know where the troops will come from, or when they will be sent.

The move coincided with a charity appeal to help victims of the fighting. Clashes between the army and rebels led by Gen Laurent Nkunda have created a humanitarian crisis in recent weeks, with an estimated 250,000 people forced to flee their homes. At the same time 10,000 children have been forced out of their h omes and are in danger of finding themselves amid crossfire. Many of them are not in the position to say where they are from and and do not know where their parents are.

Finally, 44 cholera cases have been reported near a camp.
