  • [01] Alavanos Lashes Out

    Greece -

    Politics

Addressing a party event held in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, Alekos Alavanos, head of the parliamentary group of SYRIZA (Coalition of the Radical Left), referred to the damage made to Mt Athos and Thessaloniki by the involvement of people in the Vatopedi scandal. Alavanos lashed out at the Government and the Socialist party (PASOK), blasting them for turning the country into a field of scandals. He touched on the problems in prisons, as well as the financial crisis, and reiterated that resorting to the progressive powers of the Left is the answer to the problems.

Alavanos accused both the government and the Socialists of raising obstacles in the work of the inquiry committee probing the Vatopedi scandal, claiming that they downgrade the process when it does not serve their purposes.

Shifting his attention to the problems reported in prisons and the grievances of the inmates, Alavanos underlined, "Open the prisons and let those who can stand up on their feet, especially the young and the minors, out. Let the doors open for Efraim and his company, who loot the country, to get in."

"Thessaloniki does not deserve this. Instead of a coalition for development and progress, we see a coalition of blackmailers, representatives of the two political party system, priests who humiliate the word of Christ, off shore companies and ship owners. This is their Thessaloniki."

Commenting on the Conservative government, Alavanos said, "Its collapse has no return." The Left is the answer, noted he, further adding that SYRIZA will never be an onlooker nor a party interested in coming to power. He also said that those believed that SYRIZA's "golden period" was over were wrong, "because its message is strong and yields results."

Addressing those who ask for a coalition between PASOK and SYRIZA to oust the Conservative administration, Alavanos advised the SYRIZA members to discuss with them, explain them they took the first step by realizing that there is no answer to the two political party system and urge them to join SYRIZA's struggles.

With regard to the proposals put forward to tackle the credit crisis, he noted that Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis just adopted the measures that were taken in the USA and failed.

    World -

    America-USA

President-elect Barrack Obama is preparing a list of officials who will form his administration. Mr Obama has chosen Robert Gibbs as the White House spokesman. Mr Gibbs was the communications director, and later a senior strategist, for the Obama campaign. He also chose Timothy Geithner as the head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

At the same time, second in rank Al Qaeda leader Aiman al Zauahri has warned Mr Obama in a recorded message not to implement the same policy implemented by his predecessor. He accused him of favouring the Israelis, describing him exactly the opposite of Malcom X.
