  • [01] Italy: Politicians Arrested for Corruption

Italian politicians and a businessman were arrested Wednesday as part of a Naples corruption probe that also implicates a local councillor Giorgio Nugnes who recently killed himself, ANSA news agency reported. A total of 13 arrest warrants were issued as part of an investigation into a bid process for road and housing work, as well as management of school cafeterias, in the southern city won by businessman Alfredo Romeo's firm, Global Service. Prosecutors accuse the suspects of corruption and criminal association with the aim of tampering with the bid process, the agency said.

Two lawmakers, two municipal officials and a police officer were among those targeted in the investigation. Romeo was being held in jail, while the others were put under house arrest. Giorgio Nugnes, a local councillor who killed himself in November, was also targeted in the warrants. Nugnes had previously been suspected of instigating violence in connection with Naples's garbage crisis. Investigators had arrested Nugnes on Oct. 6 after a tip-off that he had made telephone calls to organize protests against the reopening of a rubbish dump in Pianura, a Naples suburb.
