    [02] Budget Debate Continues

Bebate on state budget 2009 continues for a second day while it will be concluded on Sunday with a roll call vote. In her speech PASOK deputy, Evi Hristofilopoulou stressed: "The new state budget indicates the government's intention to ruin the social state". Taking the stand, Culture Minister, Mihalis Liapis underlined the role of culture as vehicle for an exit from the social crisis.

Specifically, Mr. Liapis said "We are called to debate on state budget 2009 under the weight of the sad incidents. Among increasing number of talks attempting assessment of the recent incidents, I take the opportunity to remind of the role of culture as a vehicle for an exodus from the crisis".

PASOK deputy, E. Benizelos spoke of the need of a national plan to overcome the crisis and another political management underlining that people want an overall and common plan to convince them that there is still vision and someone who can describe the day after.

In response to Mr. Benizelos, Foreign Undersecretary, Th. Kassimis said: " You are committing a crime, if skepticism is the worse things go the better for us so we can assume government posts soon. Under the circumstances, apart from any criticism on the budget I would expect to hear two specific and positive proposals. The opposition has not or does not want to realize how crucial this period is.

GCP deputy, A. Kantartzis referred to the student's shooting in Peristeri while he described the new budget as anti-labor, anti-popular. He described the two large parties toned up confrontation as means to obscure reality.

SYRIZA parliamentary spokesman, Fotis Koubelis stressed that the new state budget has no responses to the country's problems and blamed the government of using the global financial crisis as an alibi to contain the social state. "The combat of poverty and social inequalities is a matter of political orientation and specific economic policy" stressed Mr. Koubelis.

LAOS deputy Polatidis said that his party will vote down the state budget because the ND government did not make a good manager and the economy can not proceed on the automatic pilot on the parameters set by Simitis government.
