Police said that the gunmen, armed with Kalashnikov automatic weapons and a grenade, had been at least two. Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos spoke of an attempted murder. "Democracy is powerful and the readiness of the Greek Police is unquestionable," added he.Huge Manhunt Underway The policemen who are investigating the incident have collected more than 27 cartridges from the crime scene, while the anti-terrorism squad is taking part in the investigation. The riot policeman, who was seriously injured in the chest and in the leg, did not wear a bullet-proof vest and was saved thanks to two mobile phones he had on him. He was hurried to the hospital, where he underwent an operation. According to flash estimates, he has probably escaped danger. The policeman along with two others was patrolling the area when they were hit from a distance of 35 metres. In their testimonies, the two policemen said they had spotted two people - one standing up and the other on his knees -, who opened fire at them. They tried to cover themselves and the two dropped down, but the third was hit. The police want to discover whether the Kalashnikovs were the same ones used in late December when two gunmen hidden within the grounds of Athens University opened fire at a riot police bus as it passed by. Shortly after the shooting, police cordoned off the crime scene, while about 72 people have been taking in for questioning. Later on clashes broke out between self-styled anarchists and riot police, with the latter dispersing them firing tear gases.
