    News

    "Slumdog Millionaire" is the Academy Awards champion, by winning Best Picture and seven other Oscars, including the directing honor for Danny Boyle. A story of hope amid squalor in Mumbai, India, "Slumdog Millionaire" also had wins that include Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing and both music Oscars: Score and Song.

    Sean Penn won his second Best Actor Academy Award with his win for the title role of "Milk."

    Kate Winslet, meantime, has taken Best Actress for the Holocaust-themed saga "The Reader."

    Heath Ledger is the Supporting Actor winner for his demented reinvention of Batman villain the Joker in "The Dark Knight," becoming only the second actor ever to win an Oscar posthumously.

    The Supporting Actress trophy went to Penelope Cruz as a tempestuous artist in Woody Allen's Spanish romance "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."

    [02] Contraceptive Spray

    According to Australian scientists, who created a contraceptive spray they are already testing on 40 women, the classic contraceptive pill will become an outdated method.

    As per Richard Tregus, head of the company women will just have to spray their wrist and then the substance will act as a contraceptive after passing through the skin.

    Furthermore, he said that experiments until now have shown that the spray is effective and has not side-effects as it happens with the pill.

    Finally, he said the spray will replace the pill and other contraceptive methods because "it is easy and has no side-effects."

    [03] Karamanlis-ADEDY Meeting

    During its meeting at Maximos Mansion today, the ADEDY (Confederation of Civil Servants) Presidium has asked from Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis policies that will protect the people. The two parties also discussed the administrative reform the Social Security issue and the status of civil servants with indefinite time work contracts. Mr Karamanlis, from his side, asked for self-restraint due to the extraordinary conditions prevailing in the economy.

    [04] Greek FM Visits the USA

    Greece's Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis is meeting Wednesday with her US counterpart Hillary Clinton. Bakoyannis is already in Washington, where she is to deliver a speech at the Brookings Institute, on "Collective Security in the 21st Century: Building New Bridges." On Friday she is due in New York to speak at the UN Security Council on the priorities of the Greek OSCE Chairmanship.

    On 24 February, the Greek Foreign Minister will meet with the head and members of the Helsinki Committee, as well as with the Chairperson and members of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. She will also meet with National Security Advisor General James Jones.

    On the following day, her agenda includes talks with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The two ladies will touched on OSCE affairs, international and regional issues, including the situation in the Middle East and the Caucasus and the EU-US relations. Bakoyannis and Clinton will also focus on matters of Greek interest, such as the situation in the Balkans, the ties with Turkey and the Cyprus row.

    [05] Rio-Antirrio Bridge Services to be Temporarily Suspended

    Traffic on Rio Antirrio Bridge will be suspended on 24, 25 and 26 Februray with short time stops due to maintenance works.

    As per the managing company Gephyra S.A. the traffic will be suspended from 08:00-16:00, while waiting time for each stop has been estimated it will be five to eight minutes.

    In case of adverse weather conditions, works will be suspended for next week.
