  • [01] First Disputes on Education

Education Minister Aris Spiliotopoulos hoped that the national dialogue on education would not be marred by petty party lines. With the dialogue on education being underway, a wrangling was sparked between Socialist parliamentarian Anna Diamantopoulou and university professor Giorgos Babiniotis.

Diamantopoulou blasted the professor for announcing proposals on the radio, arguing that no one was authorized to do. She then went on to dropp hints at the Education Minister. Spiliotopoulos, on his part, stressed that the financial and administrative independence of the tertiary education institutions would be recognized.

"Our goal is to our proposal to be convincing, effective, modern and bold," stressed Babiniotis. The Education Minister offered his backing to Giorgos Babiniotis.

Almost a fortnight after his meeting with the Prime Minister at Maximos Mansion, LAOS head Giorgos Karatzaferis told NET radio station the issue of coalition between his party and the ruling party of ND was never raised. PASOK, on the other hand, kept calling for snap elections.

Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis rejected any discussion on snap elections and coalition government with political parties that have a huge political and ideological gap with the ruling party.
