  • [01] NATO S.G. Visits Greece

    Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis met with outgoing NATO Secretary General Jap de Hop Shefer, who is in Athens. After the end of his meeting with Mr Shefer, Mr Karamanlis described Greece's cooperation with Mr Shefer constructive, referring especially to the outgoing Secretary General's big efforts to tighten the bonds between NATO and the EU, as well as with other International organizations. From his side, Mr Shefer referred to Greece's contribution in tackling the challenges the world and NATO are facing.

    Greece's contribution in NATO's role important

    Mr Karamanlis described NATO's expansion and boosting of cooperation with Russia, Ukraine and Georgia during Mr Shefer's term of office important. He also pointed out that Mr Shefer managed especially demanding challenges, such as those in Afghanistan, the Balkans and recently in Africa for the combating of piracy. Substantial progress was also recorded in NATO's defence reform and the promotion of its cooperation with other international oganisations and especially with the UN and the EU, said Mr Karamanlis. Mr Shefer expressed his appreciation for his cooperation with the PM and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defence Dora Bakoyannis and Vagelis Meimarakis.

    Greece's participation in NATO missions has always been important, he said, adding that we are before one more historic period, as it had been decided for a new military approach to take place on behalf of the Alliance. Addressing Mr Karamanlis, he said he is sure that under his leadership Greece will participate in the effort for the preparation of this new strategic concept, in view of the next NATO Summit Meeting.

    He also referred to issues related to Energy Safety and Safety in Cyberspace, describing them challenges that will have to be tackled by NATO. Moreover, he spoke about the participation of Greek frigates in the efforts to combat piracy, adding that his successor Mr Rasmussen was particularly competent.

    Then, Mr Shefer met with Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis and later he will see Defence Minister Vagelis Meimarakis.

    Ms Bakoyannis praised Mr Shefer for his efforts to boost relations between the member-states and for his institutional role as Secretary.

    Referring to Skopje, Mr Shefer said that is not optimistic after his visit there.On the same issue, Ms Bakoyannis said that Greece's position was from the beginning crystal clear, adding that it would happy if NATO accepted neighbouring countries, provided the problems are resolved.

    Mr Shefer's term of office ends 31 July. He will be succeeded by Danish Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

    [02] Tsipras: Interventions in Education Necessary

    During his meeting with President of Primary and Secondary Education, Professor Giorgos Babiniotis, SYN (Coalition of the Left) leader Alexis Tsipras said that interventions in Education are necessary, as well as the increase of its financing. He described Education a national affair that demands political will for radical changes. Mr Babiniotis also described generous financing a precondition for substantial and radical changes in the Educational system.

    Mr Tsipras said it was time for SYN's request on the abolishing of entry exams to Tertiary Education to be abolished. He also hoped that political will would allow for these radical changes with the objective to allow free access to Tertiary Education. Greece, he added should invest in Education and knowledge.

    He also explained to Mr Babiniotis why his party abstained from the National Dialogue on Education.

    In parallel, he told Mr Babiniotis that he trusts University Professor and him, but not the government; for this reason his party abstained from the dialogue. He added the government considers knowledge merchandise and not a right, denouncing the abolishment of article 16.

    Mr Babiniotis appeared open to all proposals in order for correct solutions are found for Education, adding that he would convey SYN's positions to the council in order to be discussed.

    [03] Papariga Attacks ND & PASOK

    On the occasion of her visit to Katselis factory, where she spoke with the employees in view of the European Elections KKE (Communist Party of Greece) Secretary General Aleka Papariga launched a hasrsh attack against the ND (Conservatives) and PASOK (Socialists) parties. Amongst others Ms Papariga said that the ND, PASOK and the other parties that voted for the Maastricht Treaty lied to the employees and the youth on EU's paradise and happiness. At the same time they raised the cost of living and are trying to poison the people and the youth's independent spirit.

    The disobedience and lack of discipline projected by the KKE and which incorporates to action with consistency is a unique guarantee today for the employees and above all for the youth, who are facing the first steps of their adult life under the worst consequences.

    Referring to the anti-Communist attack against the KKE by PASOK, Ms Papariga stressed that the Bilderberg Group members, among whom is PASOK's leadership apprehensive by the mud of scandal and the revelations that Siemens channeled money to the ND and PASOK parties are trying to sling a part of the mud against the KKE, the unique party that does not compromise with entrepreneurs, the capital and profiteering.

    We warn them that mud will not stick to us. Above all they throw mud in order to disorientate the supporters and friends who appear disappointed.

    [04] Greek Socialist Leader Visits China

    Greek Socialist leader and head of Socialist International George Papandreou is in Beijing, China, for the summit meeting between the Socialist International and China's Communist Party. George Papandreou will meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao and will chair the meeting of the International Socialist on a viable global society. Former Sweden's Prime Minister Göran Persson and former Chilean President Ricardo Lagos will also attend the meeting.

    [05] H1N1 Virus Appears to Be in Decline

    News

    The H1N1 outbreak has been in decline in Mexico, with the authorities claiming that its spread has been confined. Peru also lifted the protection measures. At the same time, investigating the causes of the epidemic and the transformation of the virus, scientists have not ruled out the theory of the virus escaping a laboratory. In particular, with regard to Mexico, the country which suffered the worst hit, the Health Minister stressed that the death toll, which has amounted to 60, would not exceed 100.

    He also said that less and less patients infected with the swine flu were admitted to the nation's hospitals.

    As for the victims, almost 30% of the Mexicans who died of the swine flu suffered from diabetes or from weight-related disorders, added he.

    The positive developments in the fight to combat the new flu led authorities in Peru to allow flights from and to Mexico. The Peruvian Health Minister said that no swine flu case was confirmed in Peru, adding that authorities would remain on standby.

    [06] Use Your Vote to Make your Own Choices!

    What kind of foodstuffs do we want? Which energy will we be using in the future? How open should Europe's borders be? How can we secure the equal number of opportunities and reconcile the private with the professional sector? The Euro Deputies we will elect in June will have to answer to these and many more questions.

    At the same time, the members of the Parliament after the June 2009 elections will have a wide range of challenges and choices to make.

    Thus, we should vote those who we believe will make the best choices for us! Think of some examples of the work the European Parliament has already done in various sectors and get an idea of the issues our Euro Deputies will deal with in the future and the choices they will have to make for the sake of all us. Therefore, it will conceive much easier how important it is to vote in the European Elections in June, as in this way we shall be able to choose those who we believe will choose the right way we wish our lives and Europe to take!
