[03] Change of Guard in EYP Sparks Wrangling

Opposition parties are particularly sceptical about the government's proposal for the setting up of a National Council for Domestic Security made up of politicians, judges, criminologists and sociologists. In the meantime, the change of guard in EYP (Greek National Intelligence Service) is still a subject under debate, since it will be brought up at the Parliament's Standing Committee on Institutions and Transparency. Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos accepted PASOK's suggestion to let new EYP head Dimitris Papaggelopoulos and his predecessor Ioannis Corantis testify before the Parliament Committee. The government, on the other hand, made it clear that the press reports linking Corantis' replacement with the intercepted conversations regarding the abduction of shipping magnate Periklis Panagopoulos are groundless.

Asked on the replacement of Corantis, Deputy Interior Minister Christos Markogiannakis said that he knew nothing, because Corantis did not answer to him. He added, though, that he and Corantis collaborated excellently in the campaign against organized crime. He also estimated that the case in question had nothing to do with his being kicked out.

The issues of criminality and illegal immigration topped the talks held between the Deputy Interior Minister and the reps of the opposition parties. Markogiannakis unveiled the government's plan for the setting up of a National Council for Domestic Security.

The government's handling of the case has come under a lot fire. PASOK deputy Christos Papoutsis wondered whether the Greek National Intelligence Service would be run by two prosecutors.

Asked to comment on the change of guard in EYP, Aleka Papariga, secretary general of the Greek Communist Party, stressed it is a really serious matter, mainly due to the fact that the new EYP chief has been specialized in terrorism affairs.

LAOS (Popular Orthodox Rally) Giorgos Karatzaferis spoke of a childish mistake. However, he wished Papaggelopoulos success.
