  • [01] Battling Tax Evasion

    News

The economic staff will be fully mobilized after mid August to deal with the state budget deficit. The big challenge lies with collection of taxes after the implementation of specific measures recently taken by the government such as the extraordinary levy, special tax on cars and boats, fines for the settlement of illegally converted or enclosed "add-on" spaces and collection of 2008-2009 ETAK.

Priority will be placed on the collection of expired taxation debts mounting to 1.8 billion euros and payment of VAT by businesses.

The Finance Ministry announced today an international bid for the assignment of a project regarding on line linking of cash registers and issue of invoices mechanisms with Information Systems General Secretariat aimed to combat tax evasion and issue of fake invoices.

In parallel, the Finance Ministry is promoting request for one year extension of deadline to bring deficit down to 3%.

In the meantime, recent data indicate that industrial output dropped by 11.4% in June due to the financial crisis, imports by 28.2% and exports by 20.7%.
