[01] Carnival Festivities Culminate
Sunday, 14 February 2010 16:53
Greece is dancing to the beat of the last day of the carnival, with the
western port-city of Patras traditionally boasting the biggest and
best-known carnival festivities in the country. However, several other
regions in northern Greece and the Ionian islands are known for their
distinct customs and rites, most of them based on ancient pagan
rituals.
In the meantime, last-minute buyers will have until 10pm on Sunday and
1300 hours on Ash Monday to purchase their delights for the Lenten
feast.
The weather, though, won't be an ally, as meteorologists expect strong
showers, storms and snowfalls in western Greece. Drivers travelling in
the mountainous road network of northern Greece are advised to use snow
chains.
