[01] THE OBJECTIVES OF MACEDONIAN PRESS AGENCY WERE OUTLINED IN THE FOUNDING CONFERENCE OF THE COUNCIL OF OVERSEAS HELLENISM
General Director of Macedonian Press Agency
mr.Spiros Kouzinopoulos speaking in the founding
conference of the Council of Overseas Hellenism held in
Thessaloniki outlined the agency's targets underlining
that among them is included the ambition to increase its
contribution to the mass media of the greeks living
abroad and to the Overseas Hellenism in general.
The news agency's General Director stated that one
of the most ambitious plans for MPA is to become a bridge
between the greeks living abroad and Greece mainly in the
sector of information concerning investment
opportunities, the economic situation in Greece, the
Balkans, the Black Sea and the Middle East countries.
Macedonian Press Agency is the first greek
information media that used the Internet taking advantage
of the new technologies and since April 22nd, 1995 it
sends news items writen in greek and english on a daily
basis.
In order to better meet its needs MPA moved to a
more autonomous presence in Internet. Through a new World
Wide Web server is sending brief news bulletins on a 24-
hour basis writen in greek and in english while the same
news bulletins can also be heard in the greek, english,
bulgarian, romanian, turkish and serb language.
[02] NEWS IN BRIEF * There is improvement in the respiratory functioning of Prime Minister Papandreou. According to the new medical communique, the general condition of the Prime Minister remained unchanged during the past 24 hours. The dialysis treatment continues with satisfactory results while the patient still breaths with the help of a respirator. Last night the doctors used the help of gastric catheter in order to give the necessary nutrients to the patient.
* Education Minister Georgios Papandreou speaking in
the organising conference of the Council of Overseas
Hellenism stated that drastic changes concerning the
education of the greeks living abroad are included in the
new bill on education he has already signed.

mr.Kouzinopoulos stated speaking in the founding
conference of the Council of Overseas Hellenism that the
agency was the first greek information media that
appeared in Internet taking advantage of the new
technologies. He also underlined that among the agency's
objectives is the increased contribution to the Overseas
Hellenism.
* Workers and pensioners with annual income less than
3 million drachmas will not pay taxes in 1996 according
to Finance Minister mr.Papadopoulos who characterized the
government's economic policy as one-way street.
* NATO gave temporary approval to the plan for the
deployment of 60 thousand soldiers in Bosnia to help in
the implementation of the Dayton peace agreement. The
first 2.600 US, french and british soldiers are expected
to arrive in Bosnia and Croatia soon to prepare the
ground for the arrival of the complete NATO force.
