[01] ANDREAS PAPANDREOU RESIGNED
Greek Prime Minister mr Andreas Papandreou resigned
today from the post of the prime minister's which he held
for 3628 days, almost ten years, having been elected
three times as prime minister with absolute parliamentary
majorities.
Mr Papandreou's resignation was announced late
tonight by the Press and Media Minister mr Tilemahos
Hitiris while at the same time the first in order
minister mr Akis Tsohadjopoulos who was substituting mr
Papandreou since he was admitted in the Onassion
cardiology Centre of Athens on November 20th gave the
letter to the President of the Republic mr Constantinos
Stephanopoulos
Mr Papandreou attributed his resignation to the fact
that his illness prohibited him from executing the duties
of the Prime Minister.
Mr Papandreou said that the government should not
endanger all its achievemnets of the past two years.
According to the greek constitution, the
parliamentary group of the party should elect the new
prime minister within three days.
