    [01] THE ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS CELEBRATE GOOD FRIDAY

    Orthodox Christians celebrate Good Friday today, a day of sorrow and absolute mourning, while in the afternoon thousands of faithful will follow the procession of the Epitaph.

    The Christians mourn on Good Friday for the crucifixion, while they are in anticipation of Christ's resurrection, the resurrection of the people's hopes and expectations, that will be celebrated tomorrow at midnight.

    [02] TSOCHATZOPOULOS WILL VISIT THE GREEK SOLDIERS IN ALBANIA

    Greek Minister of Defence Akis Tsochatzopoulos will visit the Greek soldiers in Albania next Monday, while Undersecretary of Defence Dimitris Apostolakis will visit the Greek force in Bosnia.

    The 420 Greek soldiers already in Albania are deployed in camps near Tirana, while the last Greek army unit that will participate in the multi-national force will depart for the neighbouring country next Tuesday.

    [03] OLYMPIAKOS IS THE EUROPEAN BASKETBALL CHAMPION

    "Olympiakos" from Athens won the European Champions' Cup last night in Rome. The "red-white" team defeated "Barcelona" from Spain with the score 73-58.

    The Champions' Cup is won by a Greek basketball team for the second year in a row, as last year it was won by "Panathinaikos".

    [04] GREEK-BULGARIAN MEETING ON THE NEW BORDER CROSSINGS

    The Greek government has granted the sum of 2 billion drachmas for the construction of the road network that will link the town of Kato Nevrokopi, near the north-eastern Greek city of Dramas, with Gotse Deltsev in Bulgaria.

    The above was announced during yesterday's meeting at the Greek-Bulgarian borders between local authority head in the region of Eastern Macedonia- Thrace mr.Anastasios Lagos and Gotse Deltsev's mayor mr.Vladimir Moskov.

    One of the three new border crossings that are scheduled to be constructed in the region will be near the village of Exochi, located between Dramas and Gotse Deltsev. Based on a Greek-Bulgarian agreement, the three new border crossings will be ready for operation by the end of 1998.

    [05] THE FIRST SESSION OF BULGARIA'S NEW PARLIAMENT WILL BE HELD ON MAY 7

    The first session of Bulgaria's new Parliament will be held on May 7 according to a decree issued by President Petar Stoyanov, while the new government will ask for a vote of confidence around May 20.

    Ivan Kostov, leader of the Union of Democratic Forces, who has been chosen by his party for the country's premiership, said in an interview with the newspaper "Pari", that the new government will not allow the mistakes of the Bulgarian Socialist Party to be repeated.

    The coalition of the Union of Democratic Forces has won the early parliamentary elections held on April 19 and got 52,26% of the votes winning 137 of the 240 seats in the Bulgarian Parliament.

    [06] BULGARIA'S GDP DECREASED BY 10,9% IN 1996

    Bulgaria's GDP dropped by 10,9% in 1996 compared to 1995 and is over 1,6 trillion lev. The country's trade transactions were 1,7 billion lev and there was a decrease of 14,5% compared to 1995.

    According to official data, Bulgaria had trade relations with 185 countries in 1996, while 46% of its trade transactions were held with OECD countries and 1/3 of them with EU member-states.

    [07] SCENARIOS FOR A NEW COALITION GOVERNMENT IN TURKEY

    A scenario adopted by Motherland Party leader Mesut Yilmaz mentions that a new government will be formed in Turkey in 15 days in which will participate the Motherland Party, the True Path Party and one of the center-left political parties.

    Meanwhile, controversy persists regarding the government in Turkey while attention focuses on tomorrow's National Security Council meeting.

    The main topics under discussion during the meeting will be the February 28 decisions reached by the Council and the measures that are necessary to counter the efforts of the islamists that are theatening the secular state in Turkey.
