    [01] NATO SECRETARY GENERAL: I DON'T FORESEE WAR IN THE AEGEAN

    Athens, July 6 (MPA)

    Javier Solana, NATO's Secretary-General, has expressed the view that he does not foresee war taking place in the Aegean Sea, during an interview he gave to the Greek daily "To Vima".

    Meanwhile, Greece's Premier Kostas Simitis is to depart Athens for Madrid tomorrow, in order to participate at the NATO Summit which will be held at the Spanish capital on Tuesday and Wednesday.

    Greece is to support the Balkan countries' accession to NATO, such as Romania, Bulgaria and Slovania, while it will also overall aim for a clause that will leave room for the accession of other Balkan countries in the future.

    Currently, there is a proposal for the establishment of four NATO headquarters in Greece, Turkey, Spain and Italy.

    [02] CLERIDES-DENKTASH DIRECT TALKS ON CYPRUS TO BEGIN ON WEDNESDAY

    New York, July 6 (MPA)

    The direct talks between the President of Cyprus Glafkos Clerides and the leader of the Turkish-Cypriots Rauf Denktash are to begin in New York on Wednesday, under the auspices of the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.

    US State Department has confirmed Washington's support to the Clerides- Denktash direct talks on Cyprus.

    Through a recently-released statement, the US State Department calls on the two sides and all the interested parties to work hard to start a process that will bridge the differences separating them, while it is stressed that the basic goal of this process remains a comprehensive solution that will establish a two-zone, two-community federation in Cyprus.

    The United States also express the hope that the New York meeting will serve as a basis for further negotiations during this year and the following one, while the statement also mentions that US special envoy Richard Holbrooke will have private and separate meetings with the two leaders before the opening of the talks.

    US State Department spokesman Nicolas Burns stressed that his country wants to offer every possible support to the UN for the promotion of a good basis for those talks.

    [03] A HEATWAVE HITS GREECE THIS WEEKEND, BUT HIGH TEMPERATURES WON'T LAST

    Thessaloniki, July 6 (MPA)

    A heatwave hit Greece this weekend and in many regions the temperatures rose to over 40 degrees Celsius, while in Thessaloniki the thermometer reached the 38 degrees mark.

    City Halls, hospitals and the air-conditioned public buildings in general, remained open for the public, while, according to the weather forecast, temperatures will start to decrease on Monday.

    [04] THE 2ND WORLD INTER-REGION SYMPOSIUM TO BE HELD IN SEPTEMBER

    The Ecumenical Patriarchate is to organize the second international inter- religion symposium in September, whose topic will be "The Black Sea at Risk."

    The President of the European Commission Jacques Santer is to particpate at the event, where 250 religion leaders and scientists will examine together the ecological dangers the region of the Black Sea is subjected to.

    [05] GREECE AIMS AT SILVER MEDAL IN EUROBASKET TODAY

    Thessaloniki, July 6 (MPA)

    Greece's national basketball team is eyeing the silver medal during today's game of the 30th Pan-European Championship which is held in Barcelona. Greece is to play against Russia.

    Yesterday, Greece was beaten by Yugoslavia 88-80. The final game is to be held tonight between Italy and Yugoslavia.

    [06] GREEK EUROPARIAMENTARIAN ON OFFICIAL VISIT TO BUCHAREST

    Europarliamentarian Antonis Trakatellis, who is also the president of the European Union-Romania joint parliamentarian committee, is currently on an official visit to Bucharest.

    During his visit to Romania, Mr. Trakatellis was received by Romanian Prime Minister Victor Corbea, the Minister for European Issues Alexandru Erlea and the President of the Romanian Parliament Ion Diakonescu.

    The officials discussed ways to strengthen ties between the EU and Romania, and also talked about the progress that has been achieved in the recent years concering Romania's pre-accession progress in its participation in the first "wave" of Central-Eastern European countries that are to join the EU.

    [07] ALBANIA: SECOND ROUND OF ELECTIONS HELD TODAY

    The second round of parliamentary elections is being held today in 115 of Albania's electorate precincts, as the final results are out in only 72 precincts.

    In two electorate districts, specifically Skodra and Mati, elections were not held at all and the first round will be conducted today.
