    [01] PAPANTONIOU: NO NEW TAXES WILL BE IMPOSED IN 1998

    Greek National Economy Minister Yiannos Papantoniou stated that no new taxes will be imposed in 1998.

    In an interview with the newspaper "TO VIMA TIS KIRIAKIS", mr.Papantoniou stated that he is concerned about the inflation and not about the state budget's "black hole".

    Mr.Papantoniou also said that the main point of the government's economic policy in 1998 will be the spending cuts.

    [02] THE SEARCH CONTINUES FOR THE 7 PEOPLE MISSING IN THE SEA REGION OF LESVOS

    The search for the rescue of the 7 people still missing since Friday at noon in the sea region of Lesvos in north-eastern Aegean, when their sailing-boat caught fire and they had to abandon it, continues to be fruitless. The only survivor is a 32yearold woman.

    The missing, among them two small children, were all from Thessaloniki and when their ship caught fire they boarded an inflatable boat and they did not have the time to send out an SOS signal.

    [03] CULTURAL COOPERATION AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED BY GREECE AND FYROM

    A cooperation agreement in the sector of culture was signed within the framework of the interim accord by Greek Minister of Culture Evangelos Venizelos and his counterpart from FYROM Slobodan Unkowski in the north- western Greek city of Florina.

    The cooperation agreement covers the sectors of theater, modern art and archaeological research. According to mr.Venizelos, a cooperation is already taking place, pointing out that FYROM participates in the events held in Thessaloniki within the framework of the Cultural Capital of Europe.

    [04] ANY SOLUTION OF THE CYPRUS PROBLEM SHOULD SAFEGUARD HUMAN RIGHTS

    The Greek-Cypriot side is interested only in a lasting and functional solution of the Cyprus problem, stressed Cypriot Foreign Minister Yiannakis Kasoulides pointing out that any solution that will not safeguard human rights and the basic freedoms of the Cypriot people will be a solution with a short expiration date.

    Speaking in an event on human rights held in the town of Paralimni in memory of the two Greek-Cypriots, who were killed a year ago in the green line of Cyprus, mr.Kasoulides said that Cyprus does not bargain the rights of its people and does not accept that its violent division is an irreversible fact.

    [05] DIPLOMAT AND AUTHOR NIKOS KRANIDIOTIS DIED TODAY AT THE AGE OF 86

    Diplomat and author Nikos Kranidiotis, the father of Greek Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Yiannos Kranidiotis, died today at the age of 86.

    Nikos Kranidiotis was born in Kerynia, which is in the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus. He studied Literature in the University of Athens and later he went to the United States for his post-graduate studies in Harvard University.

    He was a close associate of Archbishop Makarios and participated in the Makarios-Harting negotiations. After the exile of Makarios in the Sheychelles, Nikos Kranidiotis was arrested and jailed. In 1959 he was appointed Ambassador of Cyprus to Athens and he remained to this post until 1979. His funeral will be held in Cyprus.
