    Thessaloniki 14 September (MPA)

The two-day visit to Thessaloniki by Kostas Karamanlis, leader of the main Greek opposition party, New Democracy, was completed today with his visit to the city's 62nd International Trade Fair and a press conference that was attended by Greek and foreign mass media representatives.

Speaking this morning in the meeting of the Greek trade federations, mr.Karamanlis emphasized the basic axes of his party's policy in the economy, the tax system, the incentives and the role of the state in a free market economy, while he stressed that the target should be the rebirth of the country's wealth and the creation of new jobs.

Mr.Karamanlis stated that he is not questioning the intentions of any government but stated that the current government is making efforts to meet the convergence criteria in the wrong way and as a result the progress is small but the damage to the productive sector is great.

Yesterday evening, in a formal dinner given in honor of the representatives of the productive sectors in northern Greece, mr.Karamanlis criticized the government's economic policy, stressing that in the past 4 years the Greek citizens have suffered a relentless tax attack aimed at meeting the needs of the huge, wasteful, party-controlled and ineffective state.

    Thessaloniki 14 September (MPA)

Leader of main opposition party of New Democracy Kostas Karamanlis in a press conference he gave in Thessaloniki criticized the government for the economic policy it follows and called for measures that will lead to drastic spending cuts in the public sector. He also proposed the privatization of state companies, pointing out that Greece can change its fate as a country only by taking decisive steps.

Regarding the name that will be used by FYROM, mr.Karamanlis stated that the disagreement within the government on the issue, hurts the country and its negotiating position and suggested that the government should call a Political Leaders' Council meeting to present its proposals if it believes that conditions have changed. Mr.Karamanlis pointed out that Greece is not possible to accept a name interpreted as having an ethnological content.

On the Greek-Turkish relations, he said that he has certain doubts on whether they improved through the Madrid rapprochement. He stressed that Cyprus just as any other country has the right to defend itself, while Greece is committed to its protection. Mr.Karamanlis, commenting on the statements made by both sides on the existence of "casus belli", underlined that they show clearly where is "the supposed spirit of Madrid".

Mr.Karamanlis said that he does not intend to hold an extraordinary party convention if reactions within the party intensify and stated that it is natural to have bitterness and reactions after decisive changes. He also added that the doors of New Democracy are open for everybody who wants to join.
