    [01] BALKAN LEADERS ARRIVE AT ISLAND OF CRETE FOR SUMMIT MEETING

    The Inter-Balkan Summit Meeting is to start at Crete tomorrow and already state leaders throughout the region have begun arriving at the island.

    Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis stated that Greece is to carry out a leading role in the Balkans. He also stated that "we are here to give cooperation among the Balkan states a more stable ground, to create the necessary conditions so that we may proceed together towards development, peace and stability in the region. The Premier is expected to meet with his Albanian counterpart Fatos Nano this evening as well as with the president of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Slobodan Milosevic. Mr. Simitis will have a tete-a-tete session with Turkey's Premier Mesut Yilmaz tomorrow.

    [02] GREECE AIMS AT THE SIGNING OF A DECLARATION OF PRINCIPLES

    The Greek government would like to see the Summit culminate with the signing of a declaration that will refer to the need to respect borders, uphold International Accords and International Law, respect of the borders and the international accords and which will pave the way for a wider form of cooperation in all sectors, beginning with the economic one.

    Moreover, efforts will be drawn in order to grant this meeting a permanent institutionalized nature, to have a regular meeting among the representatives of the various countries and to create a basic and flexible structure through a rotating secretariat which will address the issues concerning the Balkan cooperation.

    Alternate Foreign Minister George Papandreou characterized the imminent Inter-Balkan Leaders Summit Meeting as an event of historic significance.

    Moreover, Mr. Papandreou stressed the importance of establishing cooperation among the Balkan states at a multifaceted level, as well as bilateral contacts among the Balkan leaders.

    [04] US PUSH FOR A "COMMON STATEMENT" BY SIMITIS, YILMAZ

    The United States are promoting a common statement to be adopted by Greece's Premier Kostas Simitis and his Turkish counterpart Mesut Yilmaz during their meeting tomorrow, according to Greek press reports.

    According to an article published in the Sunday paper "To Vima", the US- promoted statement is said to be a formula for re-holding a Greek-Turkish dialogue, while the article also emphasizes that Mr. Simitis is to accept Mr. Yilmaz's invitation for a visit to Ankara.

    [05] TURKISH PREMIER ARRIVES AT CRETE ACCOMPANIED BY FOREIGN MINISTER

    Turkey's Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz arrived at the airport of Heraklion Crete this afternoon, accompanied by his government's foreign minister Ismael Cem, to attend tomorrow's and Tuesday's Inter-Balkan Leaders Summit Conference.

    According to the Turkish news Agency "Anadolu", Mr. Cem has stated that he shall bring forward an agenda titled "Balkan Project" where all Balkan countries would participate in and have equal right of vote at the Crete Summit.

    [06] ALBANIAN PRIME MINISTER FATOS NANO ARRIVES AT CRETE

    Albania's Prime Minister Fatos Nano is currently at the island of Crete, where he arrived this evening at 5:30 with an Olympic Airways flight.

    Mr. Nano is accompanied by his country's Foreign Minister Paschal Milo with whom he will partake at the Inter-Balkan Leaders Summit Conference.

    The Albanian leader was greeted by Greece's Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos and alternate Foreign Minister George Papandreou.

    [07] GREEK PREMIER SIMITIS MEETS WITH ALBANIAN COUNTERPART NANO

    Greece's Prime Minister Kostas Simitis met with his Albanian counterpart Fatos Nano this evening at Heraklion Crete, in light of the Inter-Balkan Leaders Summit Conference which is to begin tomorrow.

    Mr. Simitis characterized the 20-minute brief meeting he had with the Albanian Premier as "positive" and stated that "we are moving along quite well, the problems that do exist are being addressed."

    The two men discussed bilateral issues.

    The President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Slobodan Milosevic is to meet with the Prime Minister of Albania Fatos Nano tomorrow at Heraklion, Crete where both men are present to attend tomorrow's and Tuesday's Inter- Balkan Leaders Summit Conference.

    Following their successive meetings with Greece's Premier Kostas Simitis this evening, both leaders stressed their will for a successful Summit and for the creation of a climate of friendship and good neighborliness in the Balkan region.

    The President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Slobodan Milosevic arrived this evening at the airport of Heraklion "Nikos Kazantzakis", accompanied by his country's Foreign Minister Milan Milutinovic, who is also the former ambassador to Athens.

    Mr. Milosevic was greeted at the airport by Greece's Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos. He is expected to meet with Albania's Premier Fatos Nano this evening.

    [10] BULGARIA'S PREMIER IVAN KOSTOV IS IN CRETE

    Bulgaria's Prime Minister Ivan Kostov arrived in Crete this evening in order to participate at the Inter-Balkan Leaders Summit Conference.

    Prior to his departure from Sofia, Mr. Kostov stated that his country is attending the Summit with the best intention to contribute to the cooperation among South-Eastern Europe's countries.

    According to Bulgaria's news agency BTA, Mr. Kostov is to meet with his Turkish counterpart Mesut Yilmaz this evening as well as with the President of FYROM Kiro Gligorov.

    [11] FYROM'S PRESIDENT KIRO GLIGOROV ARRIVES AT CRETE FOR THE SUMMIT

    The President of FYROM Kiro Gligorov is conducting his first visit to Greece since his country's independence.

    Mr. Gligorov arrived at the island of Crete this evening, accompanied by his country's Foreign Minister Blagoye Handjinski, where he was greeted by Greece's Foreign Mister Theodoros Pangalos.

    This is Mr. Handjinski's second visit to Greece, the first being last June in Thessaloniki where he attended the Summit of Balkan Foreign Ministers.

    [12] PRESIDENT OF FYROM GLIGOROV MEETS WITH BULGARIAN PREMIER KOSTOV

    The President of FYROM Kiro Gligorov met with the Bulgarian Prime minister Ivan Kostov at Heraklion Crete this evening, in light of tomorrow's Inter- Balkan Summit Conference.

    The two leaders held a fifteen-minute meeting after which neither of them made statements. However, it is thought as certain that they did discuss the language issue between the two countries as Bulgaria does not recognize any "Macedonian" language.

    [13] GREEK FOREIGN MINISTRY CONDEMNS EPISODES AT IZMIR

    The Greek foreign ministry's spokesperson Constantine Bikas condemned today the episodes that occurred at Turkey's Izmir, where a group of about 200 Turks threw stones against the city's Greek Consulate, causing material damages.

    Mr. Bikas stated that the Greek Government will file a demarche with the Turkish government.
