    [01] THE "YAKOVLEV" COMMITTEE OF EXPERTS WILL VISIT UKRAINE

    The "Yakovlev" committee of experts that examines the causes of the Ukrainian plane crash will visit Ukraine, Russia, Latvia and Germany in the following days and its findings are expected to be issued in the next 15 days.

    Meanwhile, the procedure for the construction of a model of the plane's cockpit is expected to begin soon.

    The identification of the plane crash victims continues and according to information, it has already been completed for 36 Greeks and 33 Ukrainians. The results of the toxicological tests on three of the five crew members are expected on Monday.

    [02] GREECE AND SYRIA ARE A THREAT FOR TURKEY

    Ankara's efforts aimed at creating a climate of tension with Athens continue. The Turkish foreign ministry spokesman characterized the numerous violations of the Greek air space that were made by Turkey on Christmas Day, as unfounded Greek allegations.

    He also maintained that Ankara adheres to the Papoulias-Yilmaz agreement based on which, no military activities should take place during religious holidays.

    Meanwhile, the decree that defines the Turkish foreign policy is in effect since yesterday and characterizes Greece and Syria as the two most threatening countries for Turkey.

    [03] GREEK PHILOSOPHER AND PSYCHOANALYST KORNELIUS KASTORIADIS DIED IN PARIS

    Greek philosopher and psychoanalyst Kornelius Kastoriadis died in Paris last night from complications after an open heart surgery, at the age of 75. He was one of the most significant contemporary philosophers and his work marked the 20th century thought.

    Kastoriadis was born in Istanbul in 1922 and lived in France since 1945. He studied law and philosophy in Athens and since his high school years he was involved in political and social activities.

    He published many treatises and reports and was one of the founders of the magazine "Socialism or Barbarism" which from 1946 to 1967 exercised criticism on the bureaucratic society and the way Marxism was implemented in the former Soviet Union.

    Kastoriadis studied math, economics and psychoanalysis which exercised professionally and he was present in all the significant moments of the international political, social and spiritual life.

    [04] THE TURKISH CYPRIOT REGIME WITHDREW FROM THE UN TALKS ON CYPRUS

    The Turkish Cypriot regime withdrew from the UN sponsored talks on Cyprus and therefore, the communal talks on the Cyprus issue will be interrupted starting today, according to the minister of defense of the Turkish Cypriot regime.

    Cypriot Republic foreign minister Yiannakis Kasoulides speculated that Turkey's stance toward Europe is changing. Mr.Kasoulides stated that judging from the recent speeches delivered by Turkish prime minister Mesut Yilmaz, Turkey will not abandon its efforts to become an EU member.

    [05] RAILWAY TRANSPORTATION BETWEEN GREECE AND FYROM IS IMPROVED

    The passenger and goods transportation by train is expected to be improved in FYROM during 1998, as it was stressed in a press conference by the management of the country's railways.

    As it was stressed, the cooperation with the Greek Railway Organization will continue and an Athens-Thessaloniki-Skopje joint express line is expected to be in operation soon, contributing to the increase of the volume of FYROM's railway transportation.

    United Nations' officials speculate that 1998 will offer a unique chance for the solution of the Cyprus problem, while at the same time, they warn that there will be negative implications if the interested parties do not take advantage of this opportunity.

    Also, the UN officials believe that the biggest obstacle to the solution of the problem is the lack of confidence but they express the hope that this will change when all the interested parties will realize that the solution of the Cyprus problem will be to their benefit.

    [07] A TURKISH SHIP WITH 750 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS RUN AGROUND IN KALABRIA

    Kalabria 27 December (MPA)

    A Turkish ship, with 750 illegal immigrants of Kurdish origin on board, run aground in Kalabria, southern Italy at dawn today.

    A doctor has boarded the ship to offer first aid to the illegal immigrants and the residents of the nearby town of Santa Katerina have sent them food.

    Meanwhile in Greece, 9 men and 2 women Iraqi Kurds were abandoned by a Turkish slave-trader at the rocky islet of Makronisi, near Samos in south- eastern Aegean.

    Also, in the island of Mitilini 64 Iraqi Kurds are being held by the local police authorities after they were abandoned off the coasts of Lesvos yesterday by a Turk who managed to escape.
