This solidarity, continues the statement, has been expressed very strongly and in the most formal way with the document dated March 22, 1943 which was addressed to the German occupation forces and was co-signed by Archbishop Damaskinos and the presidents of 29 local organizations. [10] TURKEY'S POLICY OF GENOCIDE LEADS THE KURDS TO THE MASS EXODUSWeb Posted: 16:02 GMT+2Athens 10 January (MPA)The policy of genocide followed by Turkey against the Kurdish people is the sole cause that leads to their mass exodus to the West, according to accusations made by Kurdish journalist Jemil Duran speaking this morning in the Athens radio station "Sky".Mr.Duran, who comes from the region of Ararat in Kurdistan was the editor of the bilingual newspaper "Eliz" (=Hope) which was published in Turkey. This is the fifth newspaper that is being closed by the Turkish authorities in response to the revelations it made on the violations of human rights committed mainly in south-eastern Turkey. He said that in the past 10 years the Turkish authorities have launched a dirty war against the Kurdish people and based on official facts coming from Ankara, more than 3.500 villages have been burned to the ground by the Turkish security forces, tens of towns have been evacuated and about 4 million Kurds have been forced to leave the Kurdistan region and move to cities like Istanbul and Ismir in order to be assimilated with the Turkish population. He characteristically said that in Istanbul now live over 5 million Kurds and this makes it the largest Kurdish city in the world. The persecuted journalist also stated that the number of Kurds today are estimated at 40 million people of whom, 20 million live in Turkey, 10 million in Iran, 4,5 million in Iraq, 3 million in Syria and about 1,5 million in the former Soviet Republics.
