    [01] TSOCHATZOPOULOS: ANKARA HAS FANTASIES ON GRAY ZONES IN THE AEGEAN

    Greek minister of defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos characterized as Ankara's illusions and fantasies the allegations concerning the gray zones in the Aegean made by Turkish president Suleiman Demirel. In the Aegean there is nothing up for negotiation, neither gray nor any other kind of zones, stated Mr. Tsochatzopoulos.

    Greek undersecretary of foreign affairs Yiannos Kranidiotis, referring to the statement made by Turkish president Suleiman Demirel that Turkey has no objection to bring its case to the International Court of Justice in The Hague provided that the appeal will include the total of the problems, stated that Turkey is following an inconsistent policy.

    He stressed that Greece has accepted the binding jurisdiction of The Hague and called on the Turkish side to state openly the same if its intentions are honest. He stressed that Turkey has already rejected the step-by-step approach, adding that it appears to hold conflicting and inconsistent positions. Mr. Kranidiotis added that Turkish foreign minister Ismail Cem says one thing and Turkish president another, stressing that they should decide on what line they will follow.

    Bulgarian government vice-president and minister of industry Mr. Boskov is in Thessaloniki heading a business delegation.

    This afternoon he will meet with the presiding board of the Association of Industries in Northern Greece and with Greek businessmen with large investments in Bulgaria. The Greek side will present to the Bulgarian vice- president the problems faced by Greek businesses in Bulgaria.

    PASOK's youth congress continues in Athens. Many leading members of the governing socialist party are scheduled to address the congress today, while the candidatures for the new central council are also expected to be presented.

    A five-minute presentation on PASOK's founder Andreas Papandreou will be screened later today.

    [04] COMMITTEE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NATURAL GAS PIPELINE IN ALBANIA

    Albanian minister of economy and privatizations Mr. Bufi raised again the issue of the construction of a pipeline to Albania that will bring natural gas to the country through Greece in his meeting with Greek minister of development Vaso Papandreou.

    Ms. Papandreou announced that a joint committee, made up of members of the Greek State Natural Gas Company , DEPA and the Albanian Albpetrol, will be formed to examine alternative methods for the supply of Albania with natural gas.

    The visa issue and the trade transactions between Greece and Serbia were the two main issues discussed in the meeting of Thessaloniki's Arts and Crafts Chamber president Anastasios Mastroyainnis with Serbia's Economic Chamber president Mr. Pavlisevic.

    A special emphasis was given to the visa issue and the negative implications it will have on tourism in both countries, while Mr. Pavlisevic gave useful information to Mr. Mastroyiannis on the economic situation in Serbia.

    [06] DEMIREL CHARACTERIZED THE CYPRUS PROBLEM AS A DELAYED-ACTION BOMB

    Turkish president Suleiman Demirel backed firmly Ankara's policy that aims at the creation of gray zones in the Aegean.

    Mr. Demirel stated that his country has no objection to bring all the Greek- Turkish disputes to The Hague, while he called on prime minister Kostas Simitis to respect the Madrid agreement.

    The Turkish president characterized the Cyprus problem as a delayed-action bomb and maintained that Cyprus' accession into the European Union is a mistake.

    The privatization of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia state air transportation company "JAT" and the state railways will begin in early 1999.

    According to speculations made by businessmen in Belgrade, the foreign investors are expected to show great interest in the privatization of "JAT" given the fact that this airline is based at the center of the Balkans and is capable of playing a significant role serving the passengers traveling in the region.

    UN secretary-general Kofi Annan is making a last minute effort aimed at defusing the crisis in the Persian Gulf and had consultations in Baghdad today with Iraqi vice-president Tarek Aziz.

    Meanwhile, the head of the UN group of inspectors stated that the Iraqis cooperated well in the mapping of the presidential sites where weapons of mass destruction are believed to be hidden.
