NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECENEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] DEFENSE MINISTER ADDRESSES EXPATRIATE YOUTH IN THESSALONIKIWeb Posted: 20:27 GMT+2_Thessaloniki, 12/04/1998 (MPA)_ The Minister of National Defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos, saluted a meeting of expatriate young Greeks who held their first conference in Thessaloniki, and criticized the Turkey-Israel military-economic axis, considering that such agreements did not contribute to security in the region.Mr. Tsochatzopoulos said that it was the inalienable right of every country to engage in trade and negotiations with any country it desired. "But," he added, "in the critical region we are located, it would be wise for one who looks at the economic interests alone to keep in mind that a collaboration between two countries through which the ability is provided for one to develop technologically advanced military armament -- such as Turkey is attempting through its cooperation with Israel -- will create problems with the other peoples". Mr. Tsochatzopoulos said Greece fully accepted total freedom in commercial transactions. But when those bilateral transactions evolved into relations of military significance, "everyone must comprehend that the rationale of axis' in today's strategies lead to the counter-rallying of all the others. "The security of Turkey or Israel cannot be strengthened except only in the context of the collective security of the entire region." The Defense Minister announced that after Orthodox Easter he would meet with his Israeli counterpart to discuss the entire network of Greek-Israeli relations, and would put this position forward at that meeting. [02] MACEDONIA-THRACE MINISTER SALUTES EXPATRIATE GREEK YOUTHWeb Posted: 20:21 GMT+2_Thessaloniki, 12/04/1998 (MPA)_ The Minister of Macedonia-Thrace Minister Philippos Petsalnikos yesterday inaugurated in Thessaloniki the first conference of expatriate Greek youth of Europe, titled "Thrace, Aegean, Cyprus-Borders of the European Union"The Minister noted the role of the expatriate youth in promoting Greek national issues abroad and presented a new world map of ethnic Greek communities around the world. The conference was attended by representatives of 55 expatriate youth organizations from Europe. Mr. Petsalnikos also mentioned scholarship programs offered by the ministry for students wishing to study in northern Greek universities [03] CONFERENCE OF THE YOUNG GREEKS ABROAD ENDS TODAYWeb Posted: 20:21 GMT+2_Athens, 12/04/1998 (MPA)_ The proceedings of the 1st conference of the young Greeks living in Europe are to conclude today in Thessaloniki.Young Greeks from 23 countries, from Portugal to Caucasus, attended this first meeting that was titled "Thrace, Aegean, Cyprus. Borders of the united Europe" and was held under the aegis of the Minister of Defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos. The coordinating body was elected today, appointing as its president Ms. Ioanna Gartziou, from Sweden, who stated that the start has been made. "I hope that this organization is made official so that we can serve all the Greek youth of Europe." [04] ARCHBISHOP SERAPHIM TO BE BURIED TOMORROWWeb Posted: 20:13 GMT+2_Athens, 12/04/1998 (MPA)_ The funeral of Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Seraphim who died on Friday, will be held on Monday with honors of a head of state.The Archbishop passed away at the age of 85 after leading the Orthodox Church of Greece for 23 years. He died after 45 days in hospital fighting a viral infection, complicated by chronic renal failure and kidney dialysis treatments. The Archbishop's body has been lying in state at the Athens Cathedral since Friday. His funeral is scheduled for 10 am Monday while the burial will take place at Athens First Cemetery around midday. A four-day public mourning period has been declared by the Cabinet, and all public services will remain closed Monday in deference to the late prelate. The new Archbishop is to be elected on April 28. [05] FORMER PRESIDENT KONSTANTINOS KARAMANLIS SUFFERS HEART ATTACKWeb Posted: 20:13 GMT+2_Athens, 12/04/1998 (MPA)_ Greece's former President Konstantinos Karamanlis has been place in an intensive care at an Athens hospital, after suffering a heart attack early Sunday morning.The 91-year-old statesman, who was hospitalized on Tuesday with bronchial pneumonia, went into cardiac arrest at 2.25 am., and doctors at the YGEIA hospital acted immediately to restore the heart's function, and 20 minutes later moved him to the intensive care unit for better monitoring of his condition. His condition was described by his personal physicians, E. Vorides and E. Belonias, as "very serious" attributed to a combination of factors, including the respiratory infection and his advanced age. A medical bulletin issued later today said that Mr. Karamanlis was in serious, but slightly improved condition.
