    [A] GREECE

    [01] A US DESTROYER IS VISITING THE PORT OF THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki, 04/07/1998 (MPA) The US destroyer "Arleigh Burke" sailed into the port of Thessaloniki yesterday and will stay until July 8. The ship can withstand nuclear, chemical and biological warfare and is capable of destroying missiles launched against it and against US aircraft.

    It has a 300-member crew with 25 officers. All its operations are being made by computer allowing it to locate its target automatically among hundreds of others.

    The US destroyer, which is on a training trip, left Virginia in the United States in June and before arriving in Thessaloniki it had visited Sardinia, while its next stop will be the Black Sea.

    The ship's commander stated that he and his crew are very happy to be in a country like Greece with such a great history and which is also the country of Alexander the Great, one of the greatest generals in the history of mankind.

    [02] 28% OF ELECTRICITY SUPPLIES WILL BE MANAGED BY PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS

    Athens, 04/07/1998 (MPA) Starting in February of 2001, 28% of electricity in Greece will be produced and distributed by private individuals.

    An extensive dialogue with the state electricity company employees will be held before any change takes place and a solution will be reached regarding their social security, stressed minister of press and government spokesman Dimitris Reppas.

    The draft law on the new regime in the electricity production was presented yesterday to the cabinet by minister of development Vaso Papandreou.

    Thessaloniki, 04/07/1998 (MPA) The heat wave continues in Greece. The ministries of environment and health suggest to the elderly and to people with health problems to limit their movement, while the state companies of electricity and water supply urge consumers to avoid wasting electricity and water.

    People will have free access to the Greek Tourist Organization beaches and camping sites until midnight tomorrow, while an increased number of passengers use the country's ports and airports.

    Five people died in northern Greece as a result of the high temperatures which in some areas reached 42 degrees Celsius.

    [04] NEW EARTHQUAKE MEASURING 5.1 HIT ADANA IN TURKEY

    Ankara, 04/07/1998 (MPA) Four hundred people suffered minor injuries as a result of a new earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale that hit the region of Adana in south-western Turkey at 5:15 this morning.

    Today's tremor is part of the seismic activity that reached its peak last Saturday with a catastrophic earthquake of 6.3 on the Richter scale that killed 145 people, injured more than 1.000 and completely destroyed 802 houses.

    It should be noted, that about 4.000 houses in the cities of Adana and Ceihan were seriously damaged and were characterized as uninhabitable.

    [05] THE CORDOVEZ VISIT TO CYPRUS ENDS TODAY

    Nicosia, 04/07/1998 (MPA) The visit to Cyprus of UN secretary-general special adviser Diego Cordovez ends today without concrete results on the resumption of talks.

    Mr. Cordovez will meet today with UN secretary-general special envoy to Cyprus Ms. Ann Herkus, who replaced Gustav Feisel and also with the member of the fact-finding committee on the missing in Cyprus Mr. Jean Pierre Ritter.

    Political analysts in Cyprus stated that the UN official was unable to bend the intransigence of Turkish Cypriot leader Raud Denktash for the resumption of talks on the Cyprus issue.

    [06] GREEK - BULGARIAN MEETING ON THE NEW BORDER CROSSINGS

    Sofia, 04/07/1998 (MPA) Greece and Bulgaria determined the exact location of the new border crossings that will link the Greek cities of Xanthi and Komotini with the Bulgarian cities of Rudozem and Kirtzali. The announcement was made after yesterday's meeting in Athens which was held with the participation of specialists from both countries who signed a protocol on the issue.

    The two sides in earlier contacts they had they had determined the exact location of the new border station of Dramas - Gotse Deltsev.

    [07] HOLBROOKE WILL BE IN PRISTINA

    Pristina, 04/07/1998 (MPA) US mediator Richard Holbrooke will go to Pristina for talks with leader of the ethnic Albanians in Kossovo Ibrahim Rugova.

    When asked if he will meet with representatives of Kossovo's Liberation Army, Mr. Holbrooke responded that whoever can play a role in Kossovo's fate has a place at the negotiating table.

    [08] TSOCHATZOPOULOS IS ON A 10-DAY TOUR OF THE UNITED STATES

    Washington, 04/07/1998 (MPA) Greek minister of defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos arrived in the United States yesterday for a 10-day tour.

    Mr. Tsochatzopoulos will meet with US vice-president Al Gore and other US officials, while it is likely to have a meeting with US president Bill Clinton.

    The trip of Mr. Tsochatzopoulos is expected to mark new developments in the Greek armament programs.
