    [A] NATIONAL NEWS

    [01] THE BANKING SYSTEM IS OUTDATED ACCORDING TO TSOCHATZOPOULOS

    Minister of national defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos characterized as anachronistic the existing banking system in Greece, speaking in a conference on work relations that was organized by PASOK's prefecture committee of Thessaloniki.

    In the conference participated PASOK's central committee secretary Kostas Skandalidis, president of General Confederation of Labor Mr. Polizogopoulos and Thessaloniki's Workers' Center president Panagiotis Avramopoulos.

    [02] THE WATER SUPPLY NETWORK IS GRADUALLY RESTORED IN THESSALONIKI

    The water supply network of Thessaloniki is being gradually restored since the early morning hours today. The special Water Supply Organization crews worked all through the night to restore the damage in the water-main. An investigation is underway to determine what caused the breakdown.

    The technicians and mayor of Thessaloniki Dimitris Dimitriadis, who is also the president of Thessaloniki's Water Supply Organization, maintain that the failures observed regularly in the network are due to the fact that the whole water supply network is very old and funds are requested to replace it.

    [03] THE WORLD COUNCIL OF HELLENES ABROAD MEETS IN THESSALONIKI

    The meeting of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SEA) presiding board continues for a second day in Thessaloniki.

    The issues for discussion are the tourist policy and the promotion of Greece abroad, the budget for SAE's operation as well as, the fundraising organized for the Greeks of the former Soviet Union.

    The members of the presiding board will meet with minister of education Gerasimos Arsenis and minister of environment, land planning and public works Kostas Laliotis in Athens this afternoon and will also have contacts with political party leaders.

    [04] THE FUNERAL OF ZOI KARELLI WAS HELD IN THESSALONIKI TODAY

    Thessaloniki's literary world said the last goodbye to the "lady of poetry" Zoi Karelli who was buried today.

    Her friends, who knew about her visions ever since she made her first steps in poetry in 1935 as well as, many ordinary people paid their last respects to Chrisoula Argiriadou mostly known by her pen-name, Zoi Karelli. The funeral service was held in the church of the Ascension of Christ in Thessaloniki.

    Thessaloniki poetess Zoe Karelli died yesterday at the age of 96 and in her works she eloquently wove the ancient Greek spirit with Christianity.

    Since 1935, the poetess published 12 poem anthologies and often collaborated with the literary periodical "Kochlias".

    Zoi Karelli was also a corresponding member of the Athens Academy and a candidate for the Nobel in Literature. A frequent translator of T.S. Eliot's works, in 1956 she was bestowed with the state award for her "Kassandra" anthology, while in 1974 she was granted the State's Poetry Award. In 1978 she was honored by the Athens Academy while in 1988 she was named honorary professor by the Aristotle University's School of Philosophy. Three years ago, the president of the Hellenic Republic honored her with the Palm Commander Award.

    [05] CABINET MEETING IN ATHENS

    The distribution of funds from the 3rd Community Framework of Support was the main issue of discussion in today's cabinet meeting.

    The government gives an emphasis to infrastructure and work force to increase competitiveness and employment opportunities. In the report prepared by national economy and finance minister Yiannos Papantoniou is mentioned that a special attention is paid to the completion and expansion of big projects and development infrastructures.

    [06] THE EURO-REGION OF NESTOS-MESTA IS AN EXAMPLE OF COOPERATION IN THE BALKANS

    Issues concerning those working in border regions (economic immigrants), the Interreg III, the Agenda 2000 and the lifting of the isolation of the border regions as well as, the promotion of their comparative advantages were discussed in the Border Regions of Europe Association Executive Committee meeting which was held recently in Sweden.

    The Border Region Nestos-Mesta was represented in the meeting by the Prefecture of Drama Local Administration and the Economic Chamber of Drama which suggested the next meeting to be held in that northern Greek city.

    It should be noted that the Euro-region Nestos-Mesta, that includes the Greek and Bulgarian Valley of Nestos (Mesta), is the only region in Greece and the Balkans which is a member of the Association of Border Regions in Europe and is regarded as an example of good cooperation between a member of the EU and a third country.

    INTERNATIONAL NEWS

    [07] OPEN INTERVENTION BY AUSTRIA IN THE ISSUE OF THE S-300 MISSILES

    Austria, which holds the EU presidency in the second half of 1998, called on the Cypriot government for the first time publicly not to go ahead with the installation of the Russian S-300 anti- aircraft missiles.

    The Austrian government since taking over the EU presidency makes every effort to avert the installation of the missiles in Cyprus and at the same time to create the pre-conditions for the normalization of the relations between Turkey and the European Union.

    [08] THE TURKISH PRIME MINISTER WILL VISIT THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES IN CYPRUS

    Turkish prime minister Mesut Yilmaz will visit the occupied territories in northern Cyprus on Monday.

    Mr. Yilmaz will meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and other officials of the Turkish Cypriot regime.

    [09] ALBANIA: NATO EXERCISES ON AUGUST 17-22

    NATO will hold military exercises in Albanian territory on August 17-22, according to the alliance's sources in Brussels. The issue will be discussed next week during the visit to Skopje by NATO secretary-general Javier Solana.

    The NATO exercises will be held with the participation of armed forces from Greece, the United States, Britain, Germany, Spain, France, Italy and Albania while according to sources, Russia is also interested in taking part.

    [10] THE ANNUAL REPORT ON THE ACTIVITIES OF THE EUROPEAN OMBUDSMAN

    The plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg approved the annual report on the activities of the European ombudsman during 1997.

    The European ombudsman deals with complaints made by ordinary people against institutions and organizations in the European Union.

    Speaking in the European Parliament Greek Euro-deputy of the socialist governing party of PASOK Nikos Papakiriazis stated that it is an institution of great importance, while he added that there is a need for a continuous upgrading of the cooperation between the ombudsman and the European Parliament.

    [11] BULGARIA BELIEVES THAT THERE WILL BE WAR IN KOSOVO IN THE FALL

    The Bulgarian information service predicts that there will be war in Kosovo next fall. In a report, parts of which were published by Sofia newspapers, it is maintained that the armed clashes is possible to spread to FYROM as well.

    According to the Bulgarian information service, Bulgaria for the time being is not at any danger by the developments in Kosovo but a wave of refugees is possible to end up in the country.

    [12] THE RUSSIAN FLEET WILL BRING THE S-300 MISSILES TO CYPRUS

    The Russian fleet will bring the S- 300 anti-aircraft missiles to Cyprus. According to the Russian newspaper "Ruski Telegraph", this the Russian government's most likely decision after the meeting of the presidents of Russia and Cyprus Boris Yeltsin and Glafkos Clerides which was held in Moscow earlier in the week to discuss the issue of the installation of the missiles in Cyprus as well as, the Turkish threats for the use of force in case the installation takes place.

    The Russian newspaper writes that the newly built nuclear powered cruiser "Peter the Great" will be the flagship of the Black Sea fleet which will bring the S-300 missiles to Cyprus.

    Referring to the route that will be followed by the Russian Navy ships, the newspaper stressed that "Peter the Great" will be accompanied by the aircraft carrier "Admiral Kusnetsov" maintaining that the Russian fleet will be in the Indian Ocean in September for the joint Naval exercises of India and Russia scheduled to last about a month.

    After the military exercises in the Indian Ocean are completed the Russian fleet will pass through the Suez Canal and will stop in Cyprus to install the missiles with the backing of the 40 warplanes that will be on board the aircraft carrier securing air supremacy in the region.
