[01] PANGALOS: HISTORY PROVES THAT THE DEEDS OF THE US PRESIDENTS DO NOT CORRESPOND WITH THEIR PROMISES

    Web Posted: 15:22 GMT+2
Xanthi, 25/07/1998 (MPA) Greek foreign minister Theodoros Pangalos, who is on a visit to Xanthi in Thrace north-eastern Greece, stated that history proves that the deeds of the US presidents do not correspond with their promises.

In spite of Washington's reactions, Mr. Pangalos reiterated today his criticism of the US presidents and especially of president Clinton.

"It has been a habit for the future US presidents to give promises on the Cyprus issue they never keep. When Mr. Clinton was a presidential candidate", said Mr. Pangalos, "he pledged that the Cyprus problem will be resolved. I suppose", said Mr. Pangalos, "he meant that he was going to base his efforts on the UN resolutions, but I have not seen anything like that yet", concluded the Greek foreign minister.

Mr. Pangalos called on the Greek Americans not to back any of the presidential candidates in the next elections. He called on the members of the Greek American community to offer their money not to the pre-election campaigns of the presidential candidates but to the Greek armed forces. He also insinuated that the new US initiative on Cyprus, under US envoy Thomas Miller, will not have the desirable outcome.

On the provocative statements made by Turkish president Suleiman Demirel, according to which Crete was a gift of the Ottoman Empire to Greece, Mr. Pangalos stated that the Turkish president is a very generous man but the peoples do not make gifts to each other, except maybe in fairy-tales.

US ambassador Nicholas Burs made a demarche, while the White House spokesman characterized Mr. Pangalos' statements as unsuitable for a high government official of a country which is a close ally of the United States expressing the hope that they will be retracted.

Greek government spokesman Dimitris Reppas stated that it is not the first time that the US State Department issues statements that do not agree with the facts and are in conflict with the declarations made by US president Clinton adding that this phenomenon must end because it is in conflict with the existing good bilateral relations.
