    [01] FINNISH PRESIDENT TO ARRIVE ON OFFICIAL VISIT TO ATHENS TOMORROW

    Athens, 13/09/1998 (MPA) Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari will pay an official visit to Greece from September 14 to 17, his first visit to Athens, taking place in return of a visit to Finland by Greek President Kostis

    Stephanopoulos in November 1996.

    Apart from issues of a bilateral nature, discussions are expected to focus on the recent developments in Russia, the situation in Kossovo and the Balkans and issues relating to the European Union in view of Finland taking up the union's rotating presidency in the second half of 1999.

    Before leaving Greece, the Finnish official will pay a short visit to Crete, from where he will depart for Helsinki.

    Thessaloniki, 13/09/1998 (MPA) The Macedonian Press Agency's two-day conference honoring the bicentennial anniversary since the death of Rigas Velestinlis came to a close yesterday with the signing of a declaration that calls on the Balkan countries' governments to take the necessary measures that would create a climate of understanding, mutual acquaintance, and cooperation

    The fifty delegates saluted the proposals submitted by Greek and foreign academics and journalists which call for the creation of an inter-Balkan school of journalism headquarters in Thessaloniki as well as for the establishment of awards named after Rigas Velestinlis which would be bestowed upon the year's best news stories, commentaries and sketches in the Balkan region.

    [03] PASKAL MILO: THE MURDER OF HIDARI THREATENS STABILITY

    Thessaloniki, 13/09/1998 (MPA) The Foreign Minister of Albania Paskal Milo expedited his departure from Thessaloniki, where he had participated a the Macedonian Press Agency's conference on Rigas Fereos, in order to participate in his government's emergency cabinet meeting concerning the murder of main opposition deputy Azem Hidari.

    Mr. Milo stated that, regardless of the assailant's identity, Mr. Hidari's murder threatens the Albanian government's efforts for creating a climate of calmness and security while he also opined that the murder could be a covert effort to over turn the government of Fatos Nano.

    Thessaloniki, 13/09/1998 (MPA) The leader of the main opposition party, New Democracy's Kostas Karamanlis lashed out against the government yesterday evening, during his speech before a large audience ion Thessaloniki.

    Mr. Karamanlis criticized the government's policy of austerity and stated that the economy can prosper with less taxation and more prudency.

    Today, Mr. Karamanlis will tour the premises of Thessaloniki's 63rd International Trade Fair and will give a press conference later in the afternoon.

    [05] ALBANIA ROCKED BY MURDER OF DEMOCRATIC PARTY DEPUTY HIDARI

    Tirana, 13/09/1998 (MPA) Albania is on the brink of another crisis following last night's murder of main opposition Democratic Party deputy Azem Hidari in Tirana.

    The ministerial council held an emergency session this morning, which prompted Foreign Minster Paschal Milo to depart early from Thessaloniki where he had participated in the Macedonian Press Agency's conference on Rigas Fereos.

    Mr. Hidari's funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon. Sali Berisha, the leader of the Democratic Party, called on all the party's followers to be there and rally against the Nano government.

    [06] STARR REPORT ON CLINTON-LEWINSKY TIES AFFECTS STOCK MARKETS

    Washington, 13/09/1998 (MPA) Millions of people the world over flocked to their screens on Friday night in order to read the lurid details of the exact nature of the relationship between US President Bill Clinton and White House intern Monica Lewinsky, printed in the explicit report of independent investigator Kenneth Starr.

    The report describes in full detail 10 sexual encounters between the president and Ms. Lewinsky, dubbed as "an X-rated diary". ``I wish he had told us the truth from the beginning and we would not have read many things that have no place in public literature,'' House Speaker Newt Gingrich said. Meanwhile, the dollar has been negatively affected in world stock markets as a result of the new turn of events.
