NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECE[B] BALKANSNEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] PEACEKEEPING MISSIONS CONFERENCE STARTS IN ATHENS TOMORROWWeb Posted: 18:27 GMT+2Athens, 04/10/1998 (MPA) The political and military aspects of peace- keeping missions will be reviewed during a three-day conference which is to start in Athens tomorrow, under the aegis of the peace-keeping missions cooperation group of the Euro-Atlantic Cooperation Council.The Euro-Atlantic Cooperation Council provides a forum for NATO members and members of NATO's Partnership for Peace program to discuss and fine-tune programs on a wide range of security issues. Approximately 60 representatives from NATO and Partnership for Peace countries are expected to attend the conference. The conference will be opened by NATO Assistant Secretary-General for political affairs Klaus- Peter Klaiber. [02] INDUSTRY, HANDICRAFT AND EMBROIDERY EXHIBITION IS UNDERWAY IN KAVALAWeb Posted: 18:27 GMT+2Kavala, 04/10/1998 (MPA) The industry, handicraft and embroidery exhibition, which opened yesterday in Kavala, northern Greece has attracted approximately seven hundred businesspeople from Europe and former Soviet Union countries.The six-day event is expected to culminate in business deals for products, commodities and constructions from the Kavala prefecture and the wider region of eastern Macedonia. The president of the Kavala Chamber of Commerce Apostolos Mardyris stated that "the exhibition creates preconditions for the business world and promotes the interests of businesses." The event will be attended by main opposition New Democracy party leader Kostas Karamanlis. [03] CYPRIOT DEFENSE MINISTER ARRIVES IN GREECE FOR «DEFENDORY» ARMS FAIRWeb Posted: 18:27 GMT+2Athens, 04/10/1998 (MPA) Cypriot Defense Minister, Yiannakis Omirou will arrive in Athens today in order to attend the "Defendory" arms fair, held under the auspices of the Greek Defense Ministry.Speaking shortly before his departure from Larnaca airport, Mr. Omirou said that during his stay in Greece he will have the chance to visit the Greek arms industry and meet with Defense Ministers from different countries. Asked whether he will also meet with his Russian counterpart to discuss further strengthening of bilateral relations, Omirou said relations with Russia "are very good at all levels". Mr.Omirou will be received by Greece's Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos. [04] MACEDONIAN STRUGGLE COMMEMORATED TODAY IN THESSALONIKIWeb Posted: 18:27 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 04/10/1998 (MPA) The Macedonian Struggle, (1904-1908), was commemorated in Thessaloniki today, where a doxology was performed and wreaths were placed at the city's Macedonian Fighters Square.Present at the ceremonies were the Minister of national Defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos who stated that the country's armed forces are in a position to defend the country's territorial integrity. [05] GREEK PREMIER TAKES INITIATIVE FOR ESTABLISHING PEACE IN KOSSOVOWeb Posted: 18:27 GMT+2Athens, 04/10/1998 (MPA) Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis is to undertake an initiative aimed at the peaceful resolution of the Kossovo crisis, after meeting with presidents Emil Constantinescu of Romania and Petar Stoyanov of Bulgaria yesterday in the ancient Greek town of Delphi, site of the famed Delphi oracle, 180 km (120 miles) north of Athens.As such, Mr. Simitis will have contacts with Germany's newly-elected chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, Italian Premier Romano Prodi and his British counterpart Toni Blair. [B] BALKANS[06] TURKEY AND SYRIA ON THE BRINK OF ARMED CONFLICTWeb Posted: 18:27 GMT+2Ankara, 04/10/1998 (MPA) Turkey and Syria came to the brink of armed conflict after threats hurled against Damascus by both Turkish President Suleiman Demirel and the country's Premier Mesut Yilmaz.In an effort to avert such development, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is to visit the capital cities of both countries and will hold talks with both the Syrian and the Turkish leaders.
